This is how I feel about Neal Stephenson. People seem to be way too obsessed with Snow Crash when it's one of his weaker novels IMO. I think Cryptonomicon, Anathem, and the Baroque Cycle are all much better than Snow Crash, at least in part because they don't combine as much ridiculous nerd obsessions into one thing. And also because I think the digressions are better integrated into the plot and not as crazy.

but of course tastes vary.
