The other four series; Enterprise may not have been awesome, but it still exists.

TNG may be a bit dated (especially early TNG), but it's still fun (and not nearly as dated as TOS, let's be honest), but I think DS9 and Voyager have held up pretty well so far.

Oh God I'd forgotten Enterprise, I just couldn't get into it.

I did see all the episodes of TNG and most of DS9 and Voyager, I think they are all dated now though, I really don't think they've held up at all.

Thing about TOS is that it's cheesy and 60s, but it was so original that it does still work and is at least worth watching I'd say. I think the odd numbered films are also worth a watch, I've seen all the films for completeness but not sure if I'd recommend some, especially the one with God in it.

I thought it was the even-numbered TOS films that were supposed to be worth watching? Wrath of Khan, the one with the whales, etc. (Because the first Trek movie was pretty terrible, IMO.) I've seen them all, though.

I think the "dated"ness of the 24th-century movies is very YMMV; I'd be interested in knowing more specifically what you feel doesn't hold up.

Yeah, it's the even ones that are good, the odd ones that are bad.

Odd: Star Trek The Motion Picture, Search For Spock, Final Frontier, Generations, Insurrection, Nemesis, STID

Even: Wrath of Khan, Voyage Home, Undiscovered Country, First Contact, Galaxy Quest, Star Trek

(The pattern only holds if you count Galaxy Quest as a Star Trek movie, which I think is perfectly reasonable. And if you do that, it's pretty much spot on)

Huh, I never heard of including Galaxy Quest in the count. I do concede that the later TNG movies weren't spectacular, though, so I guess that would help the pattern hold.

Jumping in to say that my friends and I have always said that Galaxy Quest is the best Trek movie ever made :D

Sorry yes I meant the even numbered! The Wrath of Khan, the whale one, First Contact, etc.

the one with God is the fifth I think?

When I say dated, I mean they look of their time. Like TNG looks 80s, early 90s, it just has that look and feels very earnest and cheesy. I don't mean the future seems dated! I think sci fi always has that risk, but it doesn't matter if the writing etc is great, or if it's a classic by virtue of being original and maybe saying something about it's time, like say The Day The Earth Stood Still, or The Invasion of The Body Snatchers. When you've got Deanna Troi saying "I feel great pain" well I just can't argue for the writing or the acting. Kirk hamming it up with the tribbles, sort of still manages to work though.

I do agree that some of The Next Generation can be kind of awkward and dated (especially the earlier seasons). I don't think that the same is true of DS9 or Voyager, though.

DA

I haven't seen that much of Voyager, but DS9 doesn't seem that dated to me. Visually, it's helped a lot by the fact that the station itself is alien in origin, so any inconsistencies can be partially excused. Writing wise, it's possibly more appropriate now that it was in the 90s, given the questions it asks about, you know, terrorism and freedom fighters and religious wars and imperialism and the abuses of power and having to get your hands dirty ...

I completely agree with you re: Voyager and DS9. Those have held up extremely well. As much as I love TNG, I have a harder time watching it now because most of the episodes are one-offs and very little character development happens over the course of the series.
