I don't mind the pairing, but I was super not into them being like "yeah, Jane Lynch's character is only so tough (and angry, I guess) because her boyfriend was killed". Like. I don't know, it just didn't work for me? And that scene where she flashes back to him and his death was just weird and upsetting, WHY did they even include that?

Well she was a space marine before, so I'm assuming she was always tough. Really, her entire character is a parody of a type that is usually male, and the love interest who exists only to get killed and provide angst is part of that. I do agree about the flashback though.

It's a parody of what's generally done with male characters in video games, where their female love interest is used purely as plot device fodder to get them where they are now. It's depressingly common, and I actually love that they turned it on its head and mocked it. The flashback was included just again, to poke fun at how patently ridiculous this trope is.

But she was always hard and tough even before that. That's made clear in some supplemental materials that show her before her Brad died.

A character in the movie outright states why it's been included:

"She was programmed with the most tragic back history". The flashback was to restate that.

Kids got this

Every time I see people getting really pissed about this I feel like they missed it.

This is literally the joke.
