It's a parody of what's generally done with male characters in video games, where their female love interest is used purely as plot device fodder to get them where they are now. It's depressingly common, and I actually love that they turned it on its head and mocked it. The flashback was included just again, to poke fun at how patently ridiculous this trope is.

But she was always hard and tough even before that. That's made clear in some supplemental materials that show her before her Brad died.
