Questions about PS4

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:13 pm (UTC)(link)
I know very little about game consoles and everything I've read about the PS4 is either way over my head or I have reason to believe the information isn't accurate. Some of what I've read seems to be based on speculation and some of it seems like it might be out of date. I know Microsoft backtracked on some stuff for the new X-Box but it isn't clear to me if Sony did the same with the PS4.

To give you an idea of how confused I am about the PS4, I can't even tell if it takes discs or if it's all digital downloads. I realize that makes me sound incredibly stupid but really the issue is that I am not at all familiar with the technical jargon I've read. The articles and blogs I've found about the PS4 assume the reader has in-depth knowledge of the hardware of various consoles and I'm totally lost when I read them.

My husband and I were going to get a PS3 this year but didn't when the PS4 was announced. We specifically want to play certain games that are only on PS3. If we bought the games now and then a PS4 when it comes out, would we be able to play those games on it?

I also welcome any suggestions you have about which system to get if the PS4 can play those games. Just please remember that I'm a layman :)

according to this article, the ps4 won't be backwards compatible due to software changes, but they'll be streaming ps3 games online. since you haven't bought any of the games yet, this shouldn't have much impact on you. you can buy the ps4 and also play the ps3 games you want. kind of sucks for people who have physical copies of ps3 games that they want to play on their ps4 though (I know some people are planning to sell their ps3s in order to raise money for the new console)

Thank you!

you already have an answer but I already typed this up so...

The PS4 does use discs. You can download digitally but it isn't necessary. As far as I know you don't have to connect your console to the internet (ever) unless the company that makes the specific game you want places some kind of restriction on it that forces you to do so. (That probably won't happen to many games.)

If you want to play PS3 games on a disc you'll have to get a PS3. :( The PS4 isn't backwards compatible which means it won't play PS3 discs. Technically you can play PS3 games (as well as PS and PS2 games) on a PS4 with 'cloud gaming' (so using the internet), but I'm not sure how much the cost will be for those games or if you'll be allowed to play games that you already own for free. (I imagine you'll have to pay again tbh, but since you don't own any PS3 games yet you should be fine. Unless the internet thing is a problem for you, in which case you would be better off buying a PS3.)

Also, just fyi, if you want to play multiplayer games on the PS4 you have to subscribe to Playstation Plus. You can download updates, use apps and social features without it, but if you want to play most online games you need to subcribe to Playstation Plus. (I think it's about $60 a year? Not sure.)

Thank you so much for still posting. This explained things for me perfectly and answered questions I didn't even know I had. I really appreciate it!

I wanted to add that Playstation Plus gives you free games too but you'd already replied. I think they give their subscribers about three to five games every month. I'm not sure exactly how it works since I don't have it, but I suppose they have a collection of games you can download once you're a subscriber, and every once in a while they'll change (add and remove) games for that collection.

So if you have a reliable connection, don't mind paying the subscription price and don't mind the no discs thing you could get some games for 'free'. (You do KINDA still pay for them imo, but...it's a pretty good setup if you want to play online multiplayer games.)

Sorry for the mini-rant, haha. (But you are welcome!)

You won't be able to play them on the PS4 if you buy them now. You can play them on the PS4 if you buy them digitally on the PS4 if Sony releases the titles you want. If you're not big into gaming and just want a console that can play a few games you're interested in, you're probably better off getting a PS3.

Thank you so much! I think we are going to get a PS3 since it costs less, we can get it now, and we can get the games cheap at GameStop. We don't really play much and can get a PS4 in a few years when they cost less if there are games we really want.

disclaimer: I don't have a ps3 or playstation plus :(

if you're willing to spend about 5 USD a month, you might want to subscribe to the PlayStation Plus, which gives free game (as digital downloads) every now and then (once you download them they're yours to play as long as you keep the subscription; but if you stop the subscription, let time pass, and then subscribe again, they'll be there to play again. You do have to download them within the time period, though, since they're only up for grabs for a while and then they rotate them out and put different titles in their spot)
