Emilie Autumn

(Anonymous) 2013-06-23 10:25 pm (UTC)(link)
So I love (LOVE) the works of Emilie Autumn... Until I got the new album the other day.

I'm not one of those MRA fucksticks, but I'm kinda having a problem with some of the lyrics. Not just the 'misandy' (or whatever) but some of the other stuff seems kinda iffy as well (Really Emilie, We're going to tell people with mental illnesses not to take their medication because doctors are evil and just want to crush your spirit?).

I'm very conflicted, because I have always respected her works, she's always struck me as a good feminist and a good role mole for girls, and I know she has damn good reasons to hate the medical community and men in general, but I kinda feel like I can't get behind this, this leaves me with a sense of loss (Like I've lost Emilie Autumn as a role model) and feeling like a bit of a bad feminist to boot.

don't know about the other thing, but it sounds like her take on medication would probably irk me too. I know some doctors are quick to overmedicate or even give the wrong medication to people with mental illness, but I don't think I could even function without my meds. My brain chemistry is fucked up and if taking meds to help control it is crushing my spirit then oh well

yeahhhh... part of me likes Emilie Autumn because of the whole "yeah! girl power!" thing, but the other part of me doesn't like her take on mental illness.

I've had depression & anxiety, and I understand why she'd have her reasons to dislike the mental health establishment. I'm even a bit iffy sometimes about the tendency of doctors to shove pills at mental health problems without actually changing the patterns of thinking involved.

But the fact is, medication can WORK for a lot of people, and it's not okay to make people feel bad because they NEED medication to function.

Don't beat yourself up over it anon.

We've had these "bad feminist" threads before. You're not a "bad feminist" for not liking Emilie Autumn!

she's diagnosed bipolar and recently made a huge deal about refusing medication from now on and all of us who don't follow her lead are inspid sheep and I am so done with her.

Holy crap, an Emilie Autumn thread on here.

I'm not gonna comment on all that crap though, some parts of the fandom are...not that great.
