Seconding the NeverEnding Road (although I stopped reading a few months back when it got all religiousness-preachy urgh)
But it's a great example of working well with a genderswap

couple of months ago maybe? dumbledore was the speech piece but it was very OOC and threw me from the entire story, so now i can't get back into it

I can't remember such a thing (not that I don't believe you), but it must have been something super-brief or else it would have thrown me out of the story too, for I so dislike pushing of religion in fanfiction as well.

If it reassures you, nothing like that has popped up lately.
