I started out the same, but damn, after a while, Walt is well and truly his own monstrous creature. It's more bizarre for me to go back and watch Malcom re-runs. I keep thinking one of Hal's kooky!dad moments is going to end in horrific bloodshed.

I think Bryan Cranston does a great job making Walt a unique character, but I do remember seeing the promo photos from S1 and not being sure if it was a drama or comedy, considering Hal. I would totally read fic in which the character was actually Hal, around the time when Jamie was about to be born, perhaps?

Man, I was just going to suggest something similar. It was done correctly, that might possibly be the best crossover ever.

And dude, wasn't there an episode of Malcolm where Hal had a vendetta against a guy who stole his idea too?

For a long time, I was reluctant to watch this show because I was sure I wouldn't be able to unsee Hal. When I finally did watch it, I was right--even though he's a great actor, I couldn't quite separate Walt from Hal.

However, that WASN'T a bad thing for me. In fact, it made Walt's character twice as interesting (and ten times as unsettling).

I'm kinda the opposite but not exactly? I have issues about drugs and can't watch Breaking Bad. But over time Bryan Cranston has become Walt to me through casual contact through friends. And now it's really weird trying to watch Malcolm in the Middle.

This is my whole reason for not wanting to watch breaking bad.

I know it's meant to be excellent television but I don't want to unsee Hal every time I look at Cranston and see Walt instead.

If that makes sense...

I can see either Hal or Walt or both depending on how I decide to look at him. But when Walt shaves his head and grows facial hair it does get a lot easier.

But really, Cranston is just a really great actor and I'm sure he and the directors were aware that some people were gonna be going "Hey it's Hal!" and made sure to avoid alllllllll of Hal's mannerisms in his portrayal of Walt. Seriously, even though Walt spends a lot of time hilariously epic-failing at half-baked schemes, he still manages to feel nothing like Hal while he's doing it. Not even the time where he's stumbling across the desert in his tighty-whities while trying to film himself.

I always thought Cranston was one of the best parts of Malcolm in the Middle but I never really had a problem separating Walt from Hal when I finally gave Breaking Bad a shot. Maybe it helped that my brother had already had me watch a couple of Heisenberg's most badass scenes. Seeing Cranston bald, dead serious and blowing shit up really helped to cement the difference in my mind.
