natural remedy for cramps?

[personal profile] deadtree 2013-06-25 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
tmi time
UGH my cramps are HORRIBLE today, I wanted to curl up into a ball and die while I was at work. I'm taking serious painkillers but it's not doing ANYTHING. What do you do to alleviate horrible cramps? Certain kind of tea? Standing on your head??? I'll try anything at this point!
(except birth control, I will not try that :P I know it would help but since a friend of mine died in her twenties from her BC causing a clot, I'm not willing to take it)

The only non-medication thing that has ever helped me is an orgasm which would not help you at work, and does not help me long term but usally long enough I can curl up and pass out for a few hours and not feel it.

Otherwise, I can't even work on the first 2 days because of the pain so *hugs* to you for working.

haha yeah that doesn't help at work, but it's good information either way :) thank you *hugs back*

Hot water bottles. I hope you'll find something that'll work for you! *hugs*

Honestly, running/jogging/maybe even walking helps if you're not cramping so hard you can't uncurl*.

*I get cramps that bad from time to time, and those times the only thing that works is ridding it out, sadly.

Exercise helped me. Either you're too exhausted from a good workout to hurt or exercise just naturally alleviates the pain, it works.

a lot of people are suggesting that... ugh I don't want to lol
I mean I know it'll probably help but I'm so tired from work already =_=

I know what you mean :/ Now I would have a hard time and wouldn't be in the mood to do it at home, but when I was regularly going to the gym, I went in the morning and didn't suffer from bad cramps.

Some people swear by raspberry leaf tea--and I think calcium and magnesium supplements help me.

I have some rasberry tea! I've never actually even tried it. I probably need to take some supplements too, actually. Need to look up which ones I should be on for a lady my age.

I've found taking extra strength tylenol helped me the best, and also making sure to walk, no matter how much it hurt. That and napping, which isn't good at work.

By being busy at work, I think about it less and it hurts less.

I'm always busy-- make that "harried and rushed"-- at work, but today my cramps just kind of took all my energy out of me :\

Avoid caffeine! No tea is going to help your cramps half as much as the caffeine in it will make them worse. Not even the naturally decaffeinated ones because they are not caffeine free.

A hot bath or shower might help, or a hot water bottle/heating pad. Low-level arousal can help, too. The orgasm suggestion is awesome but it's even better if you edge and don't actually have an orgasm for a long time or at all, if you can help it. (This is also good for migraines, BTW)

that's weird, since so many menstrual pain relief things have caffeine in them D: That's good advice then, thank you :)

... also I had no idea that arousal would help with a migraine. It's been years since I last had one of those thank god but I'll try to remember that for next time lol

I've found it really helps me to keep a fleece double-tucked around my torso when I'm at my desk (similar to the hot water pack recs) just to keep the area warm, which can especially be a problem when AC is blasting during the summer. And like others have said, avoid caffeine, but warm drinks (e.g. herbal tea or, I know it has a small measure of caffeine but, hot cocoa) help me also. The only time you'll find me trying to keep warm during the summer! (I'm usually a melt-at-the-first-sign-of-heat kind of person.)

I live in Texas so being cold isn't even an option, even with the AC on :x I have used those stick-on heating pad things in the winter and they help, but ugh, just the thought of using one in the summer... which is too bad, really :(

Exercise. For me, it helped if I exercised hard the day before I was due to get cramps. (Helps that I'm very regular.) Also heat.

Orgasm, hot waterbottles, hot bath (or shower if you hate the environment - lay on back so water hits tummy), curling up into a ball, those warm bags you microwave, a very pained jog around the block, sitting on the toilet (for some reason), circular massages of my stomach area

sex and booze

Exercise is only really helpful if you normally exercise. Straining your body to do something it normally doesn't do isn't going to help - it's going to make you feel worse because you're going to hurt in a lot of other places, too. However, I've found that stretching the torso tends to alleviate some of the pain; it loosens up some of the built-up tension, and it releases endorphins.

Hydrate yourself. Cramps tend to get worse when you're dehydrated, which is why it's recommended to stay away from caffeine (as it's a diuretic). Note that some "extra strength" painkillers for cramps, like Midol, contain caffeine - it's best to just stick with straight-up ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

And if it's not a dietary restriction: dairy products. It's supposed to primarily help alleviate PMS symptoms, but I've found that it tends to help cramps a bit, too. Or maybe they just don't hurt as bad when I'm not a grumpy ball of grump xD;

Lastly, if you've got somebody you can do this with: hugs and cuddles. Being in contact with people you like and are comfortable with actually releases another feel-good hormone (oxytocin (sp?) I think?) that can help. I think hugging a pet would work, too.

oh good, thank you for telling me not to exercise lol.. I just don't have the energy...

I have a prescription for vicodin for pain actually, I don't really take midol because it never did anything for me.

Unfortunately I'm lactose intolerant so no dairy :( But I do wonder if dairy substitutes would help. I'll have a glass of almond milk and see if that works :) Thank you!

Rising stomach stretch and child pose, walking if possible. Hot water bottle or anything to warm the stomach area. Hot ginger or chamomile tea (ginger works best for me personally). Good luck (hugs)

A hot water bottle (or a heated bag of seeds), a shot of vodka, and watch/read some porn until you feel aroused enough to eclipse the pain.

Orgasms really do work wonders, but since you need to be at work and all, it's good enough if you just keep yourself on edge.
