Re: natural remedy for cramps?

Exercise is only really helpful if you normally exercise. Straining your body to do something it normally doesn't do isn't going to help - it's going to make you feel worse because you're going to hurt in a lot of other places, too. However, I've found that stretching the torso tends to alleviate some of the pain; it loosens up some of the built-up tension, and it releases endorphins.

Hydrate yourself. Cramps tend to get worse when you're dehydrated, which is why it's recommended to stay away from caffeine (as it's a diuretic). Note that some "extra strength" painkillers for cramps, like Midol, contain caffeine - it's best to just stick with straight-up ibuprofen or acetaminophen.

And if it's not a dietary restriction: dairy products. It's supposed to primarily help alleviate PMS symptoms, but I've found that it tends to help cramps a bit, too. Or maybe they just don't hurt as bad when I'm not a grumpy ball of grump xD;

Lastly, if you've got somebody you can do this with: hugs and cuddles. Being in contact with people you like and are comfortable with actually releases another feel-good hormone (oxytocin (sp?) I think?) that can help. I think hugging a pet would work, too.

oh good, thank you for telling me not to exercise lol.. I just don't have the energy...

I have a prescription for vicodin for pain actually, I don't really take midol because it never did anything for me.

Unfortunately I'm lactose intolerant so no dairy :( But I do wonder if dairy substitutes would help. I'll have a glass of almond milk and see if that works :) Thank you!

Actually, exercise should still work for the cramps - part of the theory behind it is that your body releases feel good hormones while you're working out that help to turn pain to pleasure [how well those hormones work...], and a few other things.

Seriously, working out really *is* the best thing for it.
