I couldn't sleep the night before a really important exam a few weeks ago. Came in bleary-eyed, groggy and convinced I would fail.

There's this sword-and-sorcery book I read a long time ago that's stuck with me, where mages undergo various trials to progress through the ranks. One is a trial of endurance, demanding weeks of hard work on little sleep. I told myself, 'if they can do that, I can do this'. It worked. I stopped panicking and the exam went well. It didn't matter that they were fictional characters in an implausible universe: it's all about state of mind.
