Years ago, I had generally borderline-pass grades for a Maths subject. Shortly before the most important exam, one thing I thought of was how Holmes wouldn't have let a Maths tutor get the better of him. My exam grade was higher than my previous one probably because I was allowed more time to study independently. Still, there was that funny thought.
File under: Not too damaging but still not going to admit this openly.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 02:26 am (UTC)(link)Sounds like it would have been good for someone who wasn't good at the subject, but what happened was we spent too much time on what I could do. And when we were stuck doing what I found more difficult I still felt lost when we were supposed to do things I hadn't grasped well, they just went through them really slowly while I was trying to look back on what I got wrong in the basics.
I know my grades weren't their fault, so the Moriarty "inspiration" was just a silly thing that sprouted from my id. Maybe if I managed my time better I would've had more time to study on my own while I still had to attend their classes.
But in the end, days to review everything at home on my own really helped.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 08:28 am (UTC)(link)There's this sword-and-sorcery book I read a long time ago that's stuck with me, where mages undergo various trials to progress through the ranks. One is a trial of endurance, demanding weeks of hard work on little sleep. I told myself, 'if they can do that, I can do this'. It worked. I stopped panicking and the exam went well. It didn't matter that they were fictional characters in an implausible universe: it's all about state of mind.
