[Picture is a couple of images from the CGI animated films "Despicable Me" and "Despicable Me 2".]

I liked both of these movies. But at the same time they made me depressed. I felt that beneath both of them were these great dark, witty films fighting to get out but the corporate types in charge kept making the writers throw in goofy minion/toilet-humor related bullshit.

Bonus secret: I felt the same way about The Lorax. Is this going to be a thing I have every time I see an Illumination movie? Bitter disappointment over the lost greatness within? Goddamit Melandandri have some faith in your audience and your creative team!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 11:11 pm (UTC)(link)
Audiences have more often than not proved that the faith is misplaced, sorry. :(

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Yep, this. I remember after Rise of the Guardians came out (and did horribly) and people were asking if there would be a sequel Dreamworks was basically like, "Um no, if you want a sequel then the movie has to do better then this." If you want Dreamworks to stop doing 5 million Shreks, then the movie audience has to stop SEEING 5 million Shreks.

Animation studios spend a lot of money to get these films made, so they will only rarely take a chance on a slightly different story, and even these "chances" are usually not all that different, but just different enough that it will make them nervous.

This is why I really try to not go see the movies everyone else sees and put my money towards the movies I think need the audience. Paranorman for example, should have made so much money and really should have won multiple awards.

Rise of the Guardians looked like absolute crap in the ads though. They mismarketed the hell out of it (unless it WAS crap, Idk, I didn't see it)

You ever think other people are voting with their wallets too and didn't just like other things? There's no "Paranorman SHOULD have X". The matter is, it didn't.

I would agree, but I found the Minions hilarious. I think they're there specifically to show others how to do comic relief right.

Or skip over to the Japanese or Korean animation department. Plenty of animation that's dark and aimed at older audiences there.

I kinda know this feel. Maybe not so much wanting it to be a dark gritty movie, but I thought the first one (haven't seen the second) would've been a much better movie if it had just had less of "look at those wacky Minions be wacky!" Not cut it out entirely. But just a little less.

It passes the Bechdel test and, IIRC, actually has just as many or maybe even more named female characters than male ones, and that's always surprisingly nice to see in a movie marketed to all children and not just girls.

You pretty much reworded my secret in the way I meant perfectly. Not necessarily grim and gritty, but less of the "Wacky minions are wacky!" and more of the "Whoops, accidentally killed a little kid oh well I can just use two." I think the minions work best when they're playing off the human characters or when their scenes only last a minute or two. Beyond that it just gets grating.

and it portrayed adoption in a (relatively) positive light!! :D :D

TIL Despicable Me 2 has been out for almost a month in Australia. Fucking release windows.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 12:01 am (UTC)(link)
Isn't it great? For once we got to see something before the rest of the world instead of waiting months XD

But I've been good, didn't wanna spoil anyone C:

Ohhhhh, okay I was wondering about this. I guess this is revenge for all the times they've had to wait FOREVER after a film was released in the US. xD

They also got Avengers earlier

It's a movie aimed at children, there's always going to be random humour. Even the lion king had random potty humour.
For the children

Despicable Me 2 is out already? *checks release dates* OP must be in Australia!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 01:56 am (UTC)(link)
I understand this. The Lorax was especially weird because the original book was . . . well, I don't know that I would call it dark in any normal sense of the word, but it was very much not the bright colors + random humor + stupid musical numbers the movie ended up being.

The thing with both The Lorax and Despicable Me is that there was something very disjointed about them, even by kids' movie standards.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 04:50 am (UTC)(link)
You pretty much hit the nail on the head. I know there's a couple people upthread who are like BUT CHILDRENS MOVIE and I get that kids' movies are gonna have toilet humor and whatever.

But a lot of that goofy humor felt really shoehorned in. Like they'd have jokes about Gru threatening to kill his neighbors dog and Miss Hattie putting little girls in a box but then WACKY MINION HIJINKS. It just was kind of jarring. And (spoilers) DM2 has an even worse tone shift issue :/

And I say this as someone who likes the Minions and proudly displays a Minion squishy on their bedside table.

I'm looking forward to this movie because the first was surprisingly good. The only thing I am a bit disappointed is that from what I can make of the plot, Gru is now entering an anti-villain league and I fear he'll become a good guy. One of the things I liked about the first is that Gru never really becomes a "Good Hero" type like so many mainstream kid's movie would likely make him. It was different and I was kind of hoping (well, my headcanon anyway) that he'd continue to be a villain and train his three daughters to be one, too. Just imagine Gru and his adorable family stealing. >:D

My boyfriend and I gave Despicable Me a chance, but we didn't like it. We felt it was an interesting idea, but with a very bad execution.
