I've never watched Teen Wolf, and I'm not all that into the Marvel movies -- but! I feel like a lot of the reason people complain about Derek/Stiles is because the fans are pretty much demanding that it become canon.

Ding ding ding! Many Sterek shippers are pretty loud about wanting the ship canon/insisting the chemistry is there already. I've never seen the other shippers do this.

Have you seen the Destiel shippers though? They're doing the same thing, badgering the writers of SPN to make it canon. It's ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 12:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Seriously? I hope that they haven't started campaigning with cookies or other projects yet.

This exactly. Ship whatever you want but insisting it's canon or should be explicitly canon is when things get annoying. I have yet to see anyone try and go that route with Clint/Coulson, and yet it's everywhere in TW fandom with Sterek.

This.

And completely ignore other characters, and for example, when they get reminded that Scott exists, and that he's actually the main character, they bash him (not ALL Sterek fans, but I've seen the argument of "but there are more Sterek fans, so they should focus more on them, no one likes Scott anyway lol" and it makes me angry).

Wow. I'm a huge Sterek fan but I'm definitely not deluded enough to think the show should focus on them just because I ship them. That's ridiculous.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's part of it, though it's hardly unique to the fandom. The thing is, find me one fandom that wouldn't react that way if they got the same kind of interaction with and support from the cast and crew of the show as well as mentions on other web sites, reviews, etc.

That, I think more than anything, is the reason behind complaints about Sterek. I think a lot of non-Sterek shippers, even if they refuse to admit it or try to shame Sterek fans because of it, are pissed and/or jealous that other pairs/characters aren't as popular among the fans and don't get the same amount of recognition. I'm saying this as a fan of the show and someone who's fond of but not dedicated to the ship (and who's fond of many other ships and characters on the show).

Going back to the original topic, I too have never understood where some people get more unusual pairings but hey, whatever. Ship and let ship.

Same anon

Also, I think we're living in a time where slash fans are not going to be happy with subtext, queerbaiting, etc. anymore. We're going to see a lot more "demands" for pairings to be made canon, just as we'd expect to see for same-sex pairings. And since there's unprecedented amounts of interaction between fans and show people, those "demands" are going to be presented loudly to the people who might actually make them happen. I think Sterek is the first case of many and it's due in part to the atmosphere created by the show/network.

I have some issues with this level of interaction and possible influence myself, but if, as suggested, a major reason for complaints about Sterek are these "demands," then those people better be prepared to complain about a lot of pairs in a lot of different fandoms. I think it's just getting started.

I think you're right, re: same-sex pairings in tv shows and movies. Enough is enough - quit with the teasing and give us some real, actual, same sex couples!

(Anonymous) 2013-06-26 11:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm in the Avengers fandom and ship a couple pairings, but I think The prevalence of Clint/Phil is fucking riduculous. I don't watch Teen Wolf, but a couple of my friends do/have watched it, one friend informing that the first season was complete shite but it got better, the others essentially admitting they watched it for the hot guys.

It just kind of pisses that EVERY SINGLE fandom needs the 'SO TOTALLY GAY AND EVERYONE's OTP' ship, regardless if there's any subtext or support for it (or any ship) in canon, It gets a little 'fetishizing-y' which makes me kind of uncomfortable...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 10:12 am (UTC)(link)
THIS. Seriously. Does there have to be shipping with every single fandom?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 12:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes. Obviously.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 06:14 am (UTC)(link)
I ship Sterek and I really kinda love how the new season is very "Nope Sterek is not going to happen in canon" without actually detracting from the show. As in, I'm pleased the creators did not change anything for the more demanding fans.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 01:19 pm (UTC)(link)
Um, hi, one Sterek shipper here who is not demanding it become canon! Actually I would be very against it becoming canon, at least not for a very long time because it would make no sense. I am happy with just more of their snarky interactions <3

My point being there are actually sensible Sterek shippers and we hate the crazies just as much as the non Sterek shippers do.
