I've never watched Teen Wolf, and I'm not all that into the Marvel movies -- but! I feel like a lot of the reason people complain about Derek/Stiles is because the fans are pretty much demanding that it become canon.

Ding ding ding! Many Sterek shippers are pretty loud about wanting the ship canon/insisting the chemistry is there already. I've never seen the other shippers do this.

This exactly. Ship whatever you want but insisting it's canon or should be explicitly canon is when things get annoying. I have yet to see anyone try and go that route with Clint/Coulson, and yet it's everywhere in TW fandom with Sterek.

This.

And completely ignore other characters, and for example, when they get reminded that Scott exists, and that he's actually the main character, they bash him (not ALL Sterek fans, but I've seen the argument of "but there are more Sterek fans, so they should focus more on them, no one likes Scott anyway lol" and it makes me angry).

I think that's part of it, though it's hardly unique to the fandom. The thing is, find me one fandom that wouldn't react that way if they got the same kind of interaction with and support from the cast and crew of the show as well as mentions on other web sites, reviews, etc.

That, I think more than anything, is the reason behind complaints about Sterek. I think a lot of non-Sterek shippers, even if they refuse to admit it or try to shame Sterek fans because of it, are pissed and/or jealous that other pairs/characters aren't as popular among the fans and don't get the same amount of recognition. I'm saying this as a fan of the show and someone who's fond of but not dedicated to the ship (and who's fond of many other ships and characters on the show).

Going back to the original topic, I too have never understood where some people get more unusual pairings but hey, whatever. Ship and let ship.

I'm in the Avengers fandom and ship a couple pairings, but I think The prevalence of Clint/Phil is fucking riduculous. I don't watch Teen Wolf, but a couple of my friends do/have watched it, one friend informing that the first season was complete shite but it got better, the others essentially admitting they watched it for the hot guys.

It just kind of pisses that EVERY SINGLE fandom needs the 'SO TOTALLY GAY AND EVERYONE's OTP' ship, regardless if there's any subtext or support for it (or any ship) in canon, It gets a little 'fetishizing-y' which makes me kind of uncomfortable...

Clint and Coulson are probably popular because they were both in Thor (and had some witty banter) and I think they were paired just because they were the two left over.

I had no idea that Clint/Coulson was even a thing. For Stiles/Derek though, I think it's just because they get shipped a lot through Tumblr just from gifsets and have become so popular that people are tired of seeing them. I still love them but I also don't Tumblr.

Might this have something to do with the comics, a bit? I don't know how much Marvel movie fans pay attention but I'm sure they must've interacted there at some point.

But Clint/Coulson doesn't smother every single other pairing in the entire fandom. You can't even ship Scott/Isaac or Scott/Allison or a dozen other pairings without Sterek being shoved in the fic as well.

My opinion is that Clint/Coulson has even less canon backing, but the pairing has less of a tendency to be accompanied by warped characterization not only of the characters involved, but of everyone else in the fic.

Clint/Coulson shippers mostly seem to be shipping Clint and Coulson with zero canonical basis. The most vocal Sterek shippers are shipping a couple of doppelgangers of Stiles and Derek.

[Picture is a cropped image of Derek and Stiles from the TV show "Teen Wolf", a cropped image of "Hawkeye" from the film "The Avengers" and Agent Coulson, from the film "The Avengers" and the new Marvel film universe.]

I frequently see people complaining about the popularity of Sterek and that it has no basis in canon. But at least they have scenes together. Meanwhile in the Avengers fandom, Clint/Coulson is even more popular than Clint/Natasha, and there isn't even a picture of them together. I'm guessing this is not an isolated case, so I find myself amused that people complain about Sterek so much.

Secret because I know how whiny this sounds, so I don't discuss it with anyone.

I don't like either :D

Clint/Coulson doesn't make factual sense no matter how many times I get told otherwise. They share a brief moment in the comics (unless more has been added) and a scene in Thor. How iz that pairing?

Sterek doesn't make sense not matter how many times people tell me Derek "trust Stiles and lets down his guard around him" (lol no he doesn't. He does that around Scott and the female teacher he shared a scene with twice more so.) Stiles also isn't in heat every time he looks at Derek. He is SCARED of him most of the time, cause you know, Derek has threatened him and stuff.

I don't really care about Clint/Coulson, but I suspect that part of the appeal for shippers is that, although they don't have that much onscreen interaction, they're implied to have a lot of offscreen interaction, which gives slash writers all sorts of opportunity to "fill in the blanks" of their time working together with SHIELD.

I think shipping and thinking something is "almost canon" is completely different. Clint/Coulson shippers don't think it's canon (well, I assume), whereas I've seen a lot of people clamor for Stiles/Derek in the canon, and saying it's really close. I think that's why people complain.

I mean, it's possible to ship characters that are never together on screen; I know I ship Steve/Darcy and Bruce/Natasha from Avengers, and the first pair aren't even in the same movie together. But I'm not going to claim these are canon pairs.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 12:27 am (UTC)(link)
To everyone going on about how Sterek shippers are crazy about "making it canon": while I agree to some extent, the fact is that the producers and writers and actors aren't exactly helping. I guarantee if the Marvel writers started openly toying with the idea of making Clint/Coulson an actual thing, their shippers would be every bit as crazy about it being made canon.

More popular then Clint/Natasha? Er, I think that's a bit of a stretch. For every one person saying they ship Clint/Coulson, I always find find at least 10 more people asking why the hell would anyone ship them. There's also a buttload of Clint/Natasha fanart, while I've only seen maybe four or five drawings of Clint/Coulson ever. And I've been in the fandom since the movie came out.

As someone in both fandoms I can tell you a little bit as to why they're different. With Sterek there are shippers who either demand it be canon or think it already is canon. With Clint/Coulson most of the people I've interacted with admit it's a fucking crack ship and don't ever see it happening outside of fic. Also with Sterek it seems to overwhelm the fandom at times. Try to look for fic without Sterek in it. Now compare that number to the number of fic with it there. There's a huge imbalance. Now, there is a lot of fic with Clint/Coulson in it but I don't think the comparison of with/without isn't as drastic as it is with Sterek. On top of all this I just tend to find Sterek fans more annoying. Not all of them, obviously, but in general? Yeah.

And I say all of this as someone who ships Clint/Coulson and Sterek. (As well as almost every other ship but I digress.) So, I'm not trying to be super aggressively negative about the ship. I'm just explaining why I think one has more hate thrown at it than the other. (Though I will admit to a lot of... disgruntledness (?) thrown at Clint/Coulson. So it's not like everyone is cool and dandy with it.)

Thor 2 established a few things things about Hawkeye...that this was Hawkeye, Clint Barton, that he prefered a bow to arrows, he snarks and that he trusts Coulson. It's the last one that makes me ship them. Hawkeye has a rough history and he doesn't trust easily.

I love reading Sterek but I'd be pretty pissed if it became canon. It would just retcon way too much and Stiles' fear of Derek would make the whole thing dubcon at the very least. That, and the chemistry between Derek and Ms. Blake is awesome and I can't wait to see what happens. I just hope they don't make her out to be a werewolf or anything.

I ship neither of these pairings, but Sterek is far and away the one that annoys me most. I mean, I considered it, but backpedaled pretty damn fast when I went looking for fic and was bombarded with ALL STEREK ALL THE TIME. It's just so hard to find anything not focused on that pairing.
(Also, I love Scott despite his flaws and I hate that he's shoved in the background/completely missing in every single fic I can find.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 06:39 am (UTC)(link)
These are my favourite pairings in both fandoms. I am so here for all of the fic and art and gifsets and vids.

Do I think they have a solid basis in canon? No.
Do I think either of these ever would or should be canon? No.
Do I just ship them because they are hot dudes? Yep, and both pairs have an interesting dynamic to me.

Ignore the batshit faction.
Most of us are just here for the porn.
