I'm sorry to tell you this, but no matter how hard you try, you cannot be University of Chicago.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 11:17 pm (UTC)(link)
tru fax

I tried to be a hospital once. It didn't work out well.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 05:25 am (UTC)(link)
lmao A+

(Anonymous) 2013-06-27 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Current UChicago student here. Also, we're just generally awesome. (SCAV HUNT 4 LYFE, also kick ass professors and academics and whatnot. Logan is also pretty awesome-though shoddily constructed)

But it is also hard as fuck to get in now, so good luck with that.

Hey, just be careful about the University of Chicago if you're an undergrad. I've heard it isn't the best undergrad experience because it's mainly a grad student school; undergrads aren't the focus.

That, and the profs in my department who went there for grad school are more likely to be dicks. Partly because they think they're hot shit forever for having gone to the University of Chicago.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 12:32 am (UTC)(link)
It's actually great for undergrad. This was the case (that undergrad weren't given as much attention), but in recent years much much more has been added to the undergrad program. In fact it's possible to forget how many grad students there are because they're often on different campuses and you don't really compete for attention from professors because you're in (mostly) separate classes.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 05:35 am (UTC)(link)
it's actually kind of beneficial in the sense that it is very, very easy to get into relatively advanced, graduate-level seminars as an undergraduate if you want to

in my experience with certain (mostly humanities and social science) related departments anyway

[Picture is actor Misha Collins sitting on a chair holding a microphone next to his mouth.]

I have been seriously looking into applying to University of Chicago, and one of the biggest reasons was because of him. It'd be cool to get into my dream school and get to say "Misha Collins is one of my alumni".

I got emotionally invested because of an actor. Fuck.

Well, my uncle is the CFO of that university, so I'm just pumped that someone wants to go to that school! He takes a lot of pride in his work!

/overshare

Ahem, good luck on your applications. :)

I don't know if you know this, but UIC is often nicknamed "where fun goes to die." I'm from Chicago, but here's proof if you don't believe me.

UChicago is not the same as University of Illinois at Chicago, fyi (though the article, at least, got it right... four years ago)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 05:26 am (UTC)(link)
that wasn't entirely true when that article was written and pretty much isn't true at all now (it was definitely true, from what i've heard, back in the 90s and before though, which is when it got that reputation)

not that it's a party school or anything but "where fun goes to die" is basically a marketing slogan at this point, and about as true as marketing slogans usually are

Hey, it's a good school! And my BFF's from Chicago and he loves it there. Go with God, young minion. Or...Cas, I guess.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:28 am (UTC)(link)
Another current U of C student here (rising second year).

Honestly, I fangirled more over going to the same school as Carl Sagan, but the particular brand of quirkiness that Misha exhibits is one that is unusually common in the student population, and I found this immensely attractive when I was researching colleges.

Make sure you know what you're getting into as far as things like the Core, quarter system, and so on go, is all I'd say.

A lot of people applied to Brown after Emma Watson went there, so...you're not alone

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:58 am (UTC)(link)
I saw a picture of Ed Norton in a brochure and it helped me with my decision. It was never going to be a bad decision, but I won't lie and say that didn't factor into it.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 05:30 am (UTC)(link)
for me it was Hannah Arendt

clearly i'm the most uchicago

I DID NOT KNOW THAT AAAAAA

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 04:19 am (UTC)(link)
Misha Collins is a UChicago alumn?

I FUCKING LOVE MY SCHOOL, HECK YEAH!!!!~

Also, Anon. UChicago is great. It is the best thing ever.

Also yes, it is Where Fun Comes To Die, also proof that Hell Does Freeze Over, and hmmm... where people go when "I Was Wait-listed At Hogwarts". ALSO, If I Wanted An 'A' I Would Have Gone To Harvard.

The t-shirts/slogans are all house-sponsored (and yes, they are almost exactly like harry potter houses and my house is my family and they are the best thing ever aaaaa) so we have lots of great things.

It's great for Undergrad and we will love you to pieces, and everyone I've ever had was great, even the few classes I've had taught by grad students.

We like to pretend we are all work and no play, but really? It's not that bad.

Also sorry this turned into a gushy post about UChicago.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 04:44 am (UTC)(link)
It's a good school and I had a good experience there, but honestly do not make a decision like this based on a famous alumnus who attended years and years ago. There are lots of great reasons to come to UChicago (depending on what you like, what you want to do, your personality, and how hard you're willing to work) and plenty of totally valid reasons not to. But one person isn't really one of them, and you'll be disappointed if you come here expecting anything related to him.

That said, I did love UChicago, both as a graduate and undergraduate student. If you are willing to work, you'll get a lot out of your classes, and most of the professors are really wonderful. Chicago is a great city to live in. There are lots of different types of people, so most people are able to find a niche. But there were also things I absolutely hated: the self-righteousness of the student body about how ~cool and smart~ they were for going there, the constant and unending complaining about how much work everyone was doing (even when they weren't doing much), and the tendency to pass off rudeness or social ineptitude as quirkiness. Just being honest-- and again, for me, the balance was overwhelmingly positive, and I had a good time once I figured out the things I liked doing and the people I liked being around. But you should take all of this into account-- there are amazing pluses and serious minuses both. Good luck!

Why did you have to post this when I was traveling and unable to read f!s

seriously, man, why

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 05:31 am (UTC)(link)
UChicago is a really intense school, and there are definitely some assholes there who are very convinced of their own ~intellectual superiority, but I met a lot of really great people while I was there. Not to mention that Chicago itself is AWESOME and worth exploring when you're not buried under homework… or snow.

Consider your college decisions carefully, OP, and good luck wherever you choose to go! :)

(If you do end up at U of C, have a spinach and feta croissant at the Medici for me. I still miss those.)

[personal profile] redsekar 2013-06-28 06:02 am (UTC)(link)
hm...Ted Bundy is an alumni from the University I went to

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:00 pm (UTC)(link)
Nick Griffin, ack. OTOH it was Cambridge.

I know, how did they let him in, and WTH happened?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, reading his Wikipedia page briefly, it sounds like his father was a wealthy Tory, so, you know.
