Does it have your current screenname on it? It might make you feel better to choose a new one and disassociate yourself with the old name. Though that is kind of drastic...

+1. (It's a pain in the ass, but that's probably the easiest way.)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:00 am (UTC)(link)
I did this because of my old fanarts that are floating around the net.
My style evolved so much that they don't even look like mine anymore which helps a lot.

Sometimes changing everything and not looking back is the best you can do when you hate your old works.

When I uploaded some of my older, more embarrassing fics to AO3, I put a disclaimer on them to the effect that they were written a long time ago and I would write some things differently now, but I hoped that people enjoyed them anyway. That way the stories are still there for people who want to read them, but I've also distanced myself from them a little bit.

Man, I hate when authors take fic down. If you don't want to be associated with it, change your user name or put a disclaimer in or something. One person's "badly written" fic is another person's favorite comfort re-read. It's anywhere from annoying to heartbreaking to try and find something and only get a broken link.

This.

I abandoned my first account because as much as people seemed to love my writing I could NOT bear to look at them. I really wanted to just pull them off, but I hated it when people did that to me, so I just said farewell and never looked back.

This is actually a great idea and I wish more writers did it. It's so sad when most of the fics in older/smaller fandoms disappear.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:02 am (UTC)(link)
I always save art and fic I love for private re-reading/viewing.
It's YOUR problem if you think such things will be online forever.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:51 am (UTC)(link)
Goody-goody for you, Miss Snitty.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 03:13 am (UTC)(link)
*I* have all my favorite fics transcribed to hand-bound books with illuminated lettering. I wouldn't want to be one of those fools who assumes digital media will always be there forever.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 06:22 am (UTC)(link)
I think I love you.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 10:00 pm (UTC)(link)
And you've never come to a fandom late? Or had a hard drive crash on you and you lost all your files?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:14 am (UTC)(link)
as a writer who has taken her work down many times, I want to make a general apology, because I honestly never thought anyone would miss it. I mean maybe no one did, but now I wonder...

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 06:45 pm (UTC)(link)
da

apology accepted, for what it's worth (dunno if I've read your fics specifically, but, eh, it's a nice sentiment and I appreciate)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:25 am (UTC)(link)
Same, if an author seems the type or has a track record, I'll download their fics and share alike through emails.

Myself, I tend to abandon accounts with fanfic and fanart all over the place, but I don't take them down so those that enjoy can still find them.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 05:09 am (UTC)(link)
Word.

Such a gigantic fraction of what's available on line is of such terrible quality that nobody's even going to bother registering the thought that bad older works reflect poorly on the creator, because that's too much effort. People just hit the back button and go somewhere else.

But finding that something you liked is now gone? That doesn't remove it from the memory of its fans, it just makes them annoyed at the creator.

[Picture is of a sand dune.]

I've taken down some of my fairly popular fics because I think they're badly written, but the fact that there are probably people who have copies saved who might be distributing them with my name still attached makes me uncomfortable even though I've read no-longer-online fic before. I'm a hypocrite.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:12 am (UTC)(link)
A different perspective:

When I see an author's fanfiction profile and read through the stories and notice that the older ones were terrible but the newer ones are good, I don't think

"man, fuck this author, they should be ashamed"

I think

"man, how much improvement! who knows how much better they'll get in the future! I'll keep an eye on this persons's works!"

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 01:48 am (UTC)(link)
Solution: Leave 'em up.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
Sometimes I feel like you and get the urge to take down my old fics, and then I remind myself that no one probably cares all that much and I shouldn't either, and go on with my life.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I've felt like taking stuff down, too (I can barely stand to look at some of it now), but then I remember how sad I always am when I go looking for something to find it doesn't exist anymore and end up leaving everything up. And hey, based on the AO3 numbers (which, I know, grain of salt), some of the ones I hate the most are also the ones that other people read the most.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 02:31 am (UTC)(link)
I get frustrated when fics disappear, because often I'm looking at an old recommendation that hasn't vanished from the net, and the description intrigued me. I also know that looking at my own old fics I can see all the flaws, but heck, any place that has a hit counter shows me that they're still being read, and I figure that the people finding them are in the same boat. Old recs, yes, but anything I haven't read before is new. And shiny!
