I'm with you because dude, wikipedia doesn't even have a page on the angel Castiel, since he's so minror.

I've done it once but in my defense, it was in the context of a theology class. I imagine if I were in a theology class and anybody with a religiously inclined name walked in, I'd point it out and possibly make it a running joke. Maybe that's just me.

But I agree in an everyday situation, it's be pretty strange given that only a handful of the angels are actually named in the bible.

And one of the most well-known angels has a name that, at least in English, is so common that commenting on it would be the odd thing, I'd say.

That's a good point actually, my father is called Michael and I didn't even think about the biblical element because it's such a common name (if that's the one you're referring to).

I think the only one I've heard of that's rare enough as a name these days but a recognizable enough angel to be commented on was Gabriel. That one I did automatically say "like the angel?" for.

yes, Michael ... and though I'm a lapsed Catholic, the only other one I can remember is Gabriel.

(And in Jesuit fashion, I can, however, remember things like seraphim and chreubim and hosts and the differences thereof.)

It's so true, though. I was surprised to find Castiel in this small book that was just a list of angels, but not much anywhere else.
(but now I feel like that memory is a lie and it was just Cassiel listed in the book? I can't even remember anymore)

I don't mind those ones as much as the "Castiel? That's a weird name. I'll call you Cas." "Cas?" "You've never had a nickname before?" ones. I feel like I've read those lines verbatim in SO many bad fics.

I hate it when in fics (Alternate Universe fics to be exact) Cas introduced himself and someone (Dean since I read Destiel fics) is like "oh like the angel?"

So much second-hand embarrassment I have to stop (but most fics that do this aren't even worth it anyway so I'm saving myself the time and pain).

Is there even a real angel named Castiel? I thought the ''real'' version was Cassiel?

Back on topic, what I tend to run into is that someone, usually Dean, mentions, "Well that's an usual name." Which prompts Cas to explain it himself, with his parents being noted as either extremely religious or academic.

The only way I can imagine someone would recognize it as an angel name is through the "-el" at the end, which means "belonging to or of God". But yet, it still doesn't quite make sense.

After all, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a mention of "Castiel", since I think it's based off "Cassiel".

Yeah, Wikipedia says (with a reference to a Misha Collins interview on YouTube) that Castiel was inspired by Cassiel. Though for the life of me I cannot begin to figure out why they had to add that "t". When he was first introduced, I thought they were just avoiding actual mythological angel names on purpose, but then all the Uriels and Raphaels started showing up and it never stopped bugging me.

I like the fact that their 'main' angel is one without any irl/mythological associations - it adds to the originality of the show and that way no one can mercilessly trawl source materials and discover potential plot points.

Actually, Castiel is mentioned in a couple of books about angels. He is named as an angel of Thursday in Pietro d'Abano's Heptameron and that's why he was chosen for SPN. At that time the show was airing on Thursdays.
