frankly, since Elementary proved itself not to be a copycat and become a very good show, the Elementary fandom's 'HA! IN YOUR FACE' is equally as bad.
People have accepted Elementary being a different, wonderful and progressive show yet the fandom still continues to be butthurt about it...

and the initial problem was not female!watson, it was that she was no longer a doctor/in the military, which are integral to Watson's characterization, not Watson's gender.

Right, all that misogynistic and racist language was just a coincidence, there real problem wasn't misogyny or racism.

i frankly don't venture in the insane part of the Sherlock fandom, but just because those are the people that speak louder, doesn't mean they represent the whole fandom.

i'm not saying it was just a coincidence, nor am i defending their actions, the racist and misogynistic behaviour came mostly from overly proud fans that probably only have seen BBC Sherlock and don't care about other reincarnations/adaptations of Sherlock Holmes. So the fandom became assholes and used whatever they could (aka from just the casting news) to make complains to fuel their arrogance.
so the BBC Sherlock fandom was wrong but the Elementary fandom using the 'an eye for an eye' tactic isn't much better.

you can't just handwave valid complaints on racism and misogyny by going 'I didn't venture there and see that~' when snottily 'correcting' someone who is talking about said bigotry to tell them no it didn't exist.

Exactly.

Well, maybe to some people--but for plenty of people (MANY of them BBC Sherlock fans) the stated and repeated (vocally) problem was indeed that they cast a woman.

and those are all the assholes

Yeeeep.

I know plenty of people who like BBC Sherlock and are not like that (although one did give me a scrunch-face reaction when I said I liked Elementary, but whatever), but there were a chunk of loud, misogynistic, racist assholes invading the Elementary tag for quite a long while there. And almost all of them were touting the flag of 'BBC Sherlock is the one true Sherlock Holmes adaptation.'

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 12:00 am (UTC)(link)
urgghhh those fans are the worst. don't they realize there are like 10000 adaptations of Sherlock Holmes and it's not like they have seen all of it so get off your high horses. and simply disagreeing with everything Elementary isn't going change the fact there is going to be a modern day adaptation.

well i do know some BBC Sherlock fans that were doubtful/might boycott Elementary actually watched Elementary and changed their minds- some even liked it better!

Sherlock isn't even the first time Sherlock Holmes was set in "modern times". Several of the Rathbone movies were made in the '40s and had Holmes fighting the Nazis... in the '40s. And you have stuff like The Return of Sherlock Holmes, where one of Watson's descendants unfreezes Holmes in the '80s. Oh, and the descendant was a woman!

And after a couple hundred years we'll be discussing Sherlock Holmes in the 22nd Century.

Well, not us, but maybe our descendants. If we have any that survive till then.

Whereas the one true SH adaptation is another show entirely, which they bashed mostly without ever having seen it.
