frankly, since Elementary proved itself not to be a copycat and become a very good show, the Elementary fandom's 'HA! IN YOUR FACE' is equally as bad.
People have accepted Elementary being a different, wonderful and progressive show yet the fandom still continues to be butthurt about it...

and the initial problem was not female!watson, it was that she was no longer a doctor/in the military, which are integral to Watson's characterization, not Watson's gender.

I'm part of both fandoms, believe it or not. It's possible. And it is not a majority of Sherlock fans that are the ones that raised such a stink about Joan--it seems like it only because the Sherlock fandom is so vast that the requisite vocal asshole minority that all fandoms have (yes, even the Elementary fandom) is larger than most.

I'm not saying there hasn't been some disgusting shit spewed, but you can't just blame an entire group of people. Nerves are frayed on all sides of this fight, and so many innocent people are getting caught in the crossfire and nothing at all is actually getting done. Honest question: what is it you hope to accomplish? No one's going to have a sudden epiphany of "wow I was completely wrong and this person is completely right" just because someone's trolling them. And then there'll be backfire and everyone will victimize themselves and everyone will hate each other even more and it is just so. Fucking. Exhausting.

At this point I try to stay away from people who hate either because I enjoy both and the back and forth between fandoms is just ridiculous and frustrating. Seeing people hate Elementary because Watson is a woman is irritating, but I'm fine ignoring those people and going about my day.

Trolling might feel good temporarily, but these people don't deserve the attention. It's attention they want in the first place.

Stupid question, but can't we all act like adults? I like BBC Sherlock better, but just because your Watson is not my Watson that doesn't mean that either Watson is better.

Does whole situation remind anyone else of the Ray wars from the Due South fandom? Only that was slightly more complicated because you were dealing with different groups in the same fandom versus two separate but connected fandoms.

Oh for FUCK'S SAKE. The horse is dead, his ashes have been scattered over the land. Hardly anyone in Sherlock fandom is butthurt about that anymore, since (a) it's been a while, (b) they're distracted by new set pics and (c) Elementary is actually good, and I am so sick and tired of Elementary stans, 'ironic' and otherwise, whining about ~haters. At this point they're at least as bad as Sherlock fandom. Ye gods.

I hate, like absolutely HATE, being wrong, but...Elementary isn't terrible. Twist ending: I've never actually seen Sherlock, I just didn't like the idea of the female!Watson gimmick :/

The main thing that annoyed me about Joan is that they erased Watson's military history. There have been women in the military since WW1.

I don't see any reason for doing that. I really like Joan, but I feel erasing her defence force history is insulting to the character and women soldiers.

It wasn't because of female!Watson that most of us flipped out, it was because it was a pointless American remake. The Yanks have a reputation for ruining whatever they copy from the Brits, or to a lesser extent, the Aussies. They rarely seem to be able to come up with anything good on their own so they take popular shows and dumb them down which makes them shitty.

I swear, sometimes I think fandom is one big road-rage incident. Someone acts like a jerk, so someone else has to retaliate by acting like an equal or bigger jerk because they feel justified and before you know it everyone's car is on fire in a ditch and the people who just wanted to enjoy a nice drive have to stay off the road to avoid all the idiots.
