I believe he's said in interviews that the show's violence (and glorification thereof) bothered him, so he quit.

The episode where he bonds with a woman on death row is still one of my favorite hours of television from any show. His performance was so moving.

Edit: Here is an article about it.
Explaining why he abruptly quit the series before its third season began, blindsiding its creator Jeff Davis, Patinkin says, "I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year."

"It was very destructive to my soul and my personality," Patinkin says. "After that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."
Good for him. That's why I quit watching the show, too. It got to the point where I had to ask myself why I considered watching women get raped and terrorized entertainment.

I don't like that he just never showed up for work one day and left everyone in the the lurch, tbh. That is just completely unprofessional even though he does have a point.

He also left another show (with a different explanation - He wanted to be closer to his family) during a five year old contract he had signed.

Unlike those who tune into Game of Thrones each week.

The difference in GoT is that the women are also fighting back (in varied ways, I might add, from brute force to shrewd politics), and the violence perpetrated toward them isn't intended to get the viewer's rocks off.

Are you shitting me? GoT *does* use sexual violence to titillate it's viewers.

At least in CM the rapists are caught and punished at the end of the episode and they're always viewed as terrible people by the main characters.

If you're getting titillated by it, I think that says way more about you than it does about TPTB.

And the rapists in GoT are also seen as terrible people by damn near everyone. It just takes more than one episode for them to get their comeuppance (which is often way more brutal than simply being arrested). Sorry your attention span is worse than a gnat's.

LOL for using GoT as an example of non-sexualized violence. It makes me doubt you actually watch the show.

You certainly don't watch CM, a series with a smaller cast than GoT, yet who can still number FIVE strong women as main characters who both stand up for themselves and for others, three more strong women in a frequently recurring leadership, maternal and colleague roles, and dozens more women who appear as competent characters throughout the series.* Oh, and the women who are victims? Frequently portrayed with agency, inner strength and resourcefulness.

* As opposed to being naked, gyrating extras with no lines on GoT.

ahhh i still remember that episode! i think it was called riding the lightning? also one of my favourite bits of television ever. so perfectly gorgeous and chilling.

and yeah, i remember coming across some interview segments that said more or less the same thing. can't blame him at all even if i do miss gideon and feel that intellectually, the show started to go downhill pretty fast after he left.

Late but, yes, Riding the Lightning! It left me feeling gutted. Now I want to see it again...

Does anyone remember In Justice? They had a similar death row episode, which hit me even harder.
