[Mandy Patinkin]

I thought it was common knowledge that it was creative differences? But now I wonder if that was something I overheard that wasn't actually true.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
It's common knowledge. OP just doesn't know the url for google.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:51 pm (UTC)(link)
IIRC he said it was that the show's violent content bothered him, although... why agree to star in a show about tracking down serial killers in the first place? Was he under the impression that the plots would be about cuddling and ice cream?

I don't watch Homeland, but... is that show not violent/graphic, then?

I believe he's said in interviews that the show's violence (and glorification thereof) bothered him, so he quit.

The episode where he bonds with a woman on death row is still one of my favorite hours of television from any show. His performance was so moving.

Edit: Here is an article about it.
Explaining why he abruptly quit the series before its third season began, blindsiding its creator Jeff Davis, Patinkin says, "I thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year."

"It was very destructive to my soul and my personality," Patinkin says. "After that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."
Good for him. That's why I quit watching the show, too. It got to the point where I had to ask myself why I considered watching women get raped and terrorized entertainment.

I don't remember what he said at the time he left, but fairly recently (within the last year or two it seems) he's come out as calling it an awful show that hurt his soul because of all the violence it glorified or somesuch.

Now you can watch Homeland, which is a million times better, anyway.

Patinkin was absent from a table read for Criminal Minds and did not return for a third season. The departure from the show was not due to contractual or salary matters, but over creative differences. He left apologetic letters for his fellow cast members explaining his reasons and wishing them luck. Many weeks before his departure, in a videotaped interview carried in the online magazine Monaco Revue, Patinkin told journalists at the Festival de Télévision de Monte-Carlo that he loathed violence on television and was uncomfortable with certain scenes in Criminal Minds. He called his choice to do Criminal Minds his "biggest public mistake", and stated that he "thought it was something very different. I never thought they were going to kill and rape all these women every night, every day, week after week, year after year. It was very destructive to my soul and my personality, and after that, I didn't think I would get to work in television again."

I try to not think about Criminal Minds cause the whole thing made him come off as such a jackass until recently in which he has actually commented on why.

At the time he just seemed like some egotistical maniac who refused to show up for work.

as other people have posted, he left because he felt that the was the show desensitized its viewers to violence was wrong. have you ever actually googled the reason why he left? it's kind of shocking to me that you never found out all this time when it's fairly common knowledge.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-28 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
I think it's stupid that you spent so much time wondering about something that you could have had the answer to in a few seconds with a minimum of effort.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:01 am (UTC)(link)

I seem to recall that Mandy Patinkin left Criminal Minds because it was simply too extremely violent and he wasn't comfortable being associated with something so twisted/gruesome...

I could be wrong, though.

[Picture is the actor Mandy Patinkin playing Saul Berenson in the TV show "Homeland". He's wearing glasses, a beard and a mustache.]

I get irrationally annoyed that he's on Homeland because I still don't know why he left Criminal Minds. Personal problems? Creative differences? Arrghhhh what was it??

Secret because it is dumb to spend so much time wondering about dumb things.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:23 am (UTC)(link)
Because he's a pretentious asshole and it "hurt his soul".

He has stated his reasons for leaving Criminal Minds, but I would not be at all surprised if, at some point, he abruptly leaves Homeland, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:38 am (UTC)(link)
I just hope he becomes the lead character in Homeland. The whole Brody and Carrie drama in season 2 bored me to tears. That, and it seemed like Carrie was crying all the time.

He thought CM was too violent. So now he's on Homeland. HA He considers it the worst worst decision he ever made.

I never even knew he was on Criminal Minds, but now that I know he left because he found it disturbing I like him a bit more.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 12:45 am (UTC)(link)
Probably because Criminal Minds sucks.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 01:17 am (UTC)(link)
He left cause it was too violent, although, I may be making this up, but I feel like I've heard stories aout him leaving other projects in the past as well, like he seems to sign up for TV shows and then get bored or something, IDK.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 01:43 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, I'm still a bit mad that he wasn't on the Dead Like Me movie.....

Meh. I never much cared for his character - he seemed to keep secrets for no real reason and i never liked how he treated Garcia.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 04:09 am (UTC)(link)
I thought his character was okay, but wasn't that broken up when he left. It was mainly how abrupt his departure was that took me aback. It's fine if you discover you've got problems with the show and the character you portray, but suddenly not showing up to work one day and not calling in to explain why not is extremely unprofessional. The writing team had to scramble to figure out a way to write Gideon out of the series. That seems like a pretty dickish thing to do.

I heard him say once that he left Criminal Minds because it was making him depressed (not in a medical sense), and he wanted to focus on more positive things.

Like terrorism, apparently.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
I just didn't recognise Mandy Patinkin! Gosh he looks different but he's aging pretty well.
