I thought it was common knowledge that it was creative differences? But now I wonder if that was something I overheard that wasn't actually true.

It's common knowledge. OP just doesn't know the url for google.

IIRC he said it was that the show's violent content bothered him, although... why agree to star in a show about tracking down serial killers in the first place? Was he under the impression that the plots would be about cuddling and ice cream?

I don't watch Homeland, but... is that show not violent/graphic, then?

sometimes a person thinks they are okay with one thing until said thing happens

and sometimes a person thinks they are okay with one thing, and when it happens a few times they are okay, but then when it happens dozens and dozens of times more, they are no longer okay

nayrt

I would totally get that if this whole acting thing were new to him, but he was in his 50s and had been an actor for nearly three decades when he took that role. It seems a bit weird to not realize that doing a crime drama would be problematic.

tbh Criminal Minds does tend to get into darker places more often than your average crime drama

and it never stops

it's just one serial murderer after another

some of them are sympathetic

but some get away and keep doing evil

and it's based on real events, so..

I can see why that would wear down on a person, bit by bit, recording session by recording session

It wasn't just criminal of the week stuff when he left thought - they were starting up their long arcs.

Mandy Patinkin is the sort of actor who gets really deep into his character's mindset, iirc, and his CM character was going through some pretty brutal things as well as dealing with the killer of the week. I can see getting burned out by that really quickly.

This.

While I miss Gideon like crazy, and I don't agree on the way Patinkin left the show, I can totally see how he would end up burned up quickly by the constant horrible things happening to Gideon especially in the second season.

The plots were supposed to be about the team tracking down serial killers. Instead it only spent about half the show on that and the rest focused in graphic detail on the serial killer.

Yeah but not all violent/crime focused shows are the same. CM is the only crime series I've ever dropped because I couldn't stand their story focus anymore--so overwhelmingly about (young) women being tortured, abused, blamed, etc.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 04:40 am (UTC)(link)
same

I gave up when that rapist guy who attacked people during blackouts got away with a child and/or a woman at the end of a season :( I just couldn't take it anymore

(what happened to him, btw?)

they caught him and he died in the process (Shot because he attacked the arresting officer IIRC)

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 05:07 am (UTC)(link)
He dies in the following season premier. The little girl is fucking awesome too. (The wig they put on her to make it look like he cut her hair is terribly distracting with how fake it looks, though).

The violence on CM bothered him because it was week after week after week of women being tortured, raped and murdered. I love CM but I gotta say, after watching Hannibal and a few other shows, I've noticed that you can indeed have a female murder victim without all but fetishizing it. If you ever watch the show, pay attention to how different the female murders are treated from the male murders. I'm sure Mr. Patinkin thought the show would be more about the investigative procedures and the intellect of the team.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 02:19 am (UTC)(link)
IIRC it wasn't that it was violent, it was overly gratuitous violence. The whole show pretty much feels like a series of tasteless snuff films to me, and I watch the shit out of slasher films.
