"And don't say it's because I'm fat."

IDK, I like hearing other languages in video games. It's lovely. Even in Assassin's Creed it doesn't happen all that often, so regardless of if it makes sense or not I'm fine with it.

It's a nice change of pace. If you had problems with the subtitles, alright, I can see where you're coming from but...yea. I liked it. (And imo plenty of games have worse voice acting than this one. But then again I actually liked Connor's voice and think it suited his personality, so...)

[Picture is a screen-capture of the videogame "Assassin's Creed 3". The protagonist Ratonhnhaké:ton (also known as Connor) is talking to Kanen'tó:kon. They're both Native American. They're both carrying a bow to hunt.]

I think the inclusion of the Indian language was a bad choice. The Animus should have translated it like everything else. The voice acting was pretty monotone and emotionless throughout. But mostly... the subtitles just suck. Hard.

I mean...can you read that? [arrow pointing at the subtitle of the screen-capture. The text says: "And don't say it's because I'm fat."]

Okay, that guy looks like Nicholas Cage in this picture.

That's really all I'm getting out of this.

Maybe you're just not used to subtitles?

I assume that yours were at least loyal to the original. My country's translation ruined the significance of scenes where Haytham calls Connor his son, by having him call him that almost every time they speak.

No, the subtitles just suck really hard.

I have sensory processing issues that mean I can't always pick dialogue out from the sound effects/BGM/room noise, and AC is unplayable for me because the subtitles are literally unreadable on my TV.

It's not just you. I normally don't use subtitles in games, but the sound in AC3 was TERRIBLE. EVen in a quiet room with no A/C on I couldn't hear any of the eavesdrops.

Not that the sodding subtitles helped, because they are just about illegible. We tried two TVs and all the settings available and nothing helped.

There's a good chance it's not not being used to subtitles. I am - I usually have subtitles on when I watch something, actually, but I literally cannot read AC's subtitles - and this game was even worse than the other's have been in that aspect.

I use subtitles on most things, and had a big problem with ACIII's use of them. I play on a smaller, non-HD TV, and had trouble reading them even sitting close.

I with there was some option to alter the size of them.

i can read it fine when the picture is the size of my tv and not 468 pixels wide

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
How nice for you - sadly a lot of people *can't* so making a fair sized part of the game in a language most people can't speak was a little bit of a dick move [and, for me at least, made it a lot harder to care about the main character.]

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 11:32 pm (UTC)(link)
Honestly, the only issue I had with it is that I seriously cannot read subtitles in that game. So that whole section? I had little to no clue what was going on until I hopped online and found transcription/videos where I could actually read the subtitles. Otherwise, I would have thought it was really cool.

I really liked that they put in the dedication to use the real language. Pretty impressive when there's only like 3,000 speakers of it total.

But I so wish games lately would accept that not everybody's TV is 12 feet wide and made the damn text readable. I'd like to read your loading screen messages, Bioshock Infinite, but my eyes are not lasers.

Hahah, this! It's true I don't have a fancy new widescreen TV, but c'mon, give me a way to zoom in on the text or something to make it legible.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 08:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved listening to the language, but I agree it doesn't really make sense within the context of the game. Also, yes about the subtitles! I wish all games came with a choice of "big ass flat screen" subtitles or "1995 tv" subtitles.
