I'm pretty sure they made a conscious decision to avoid it. Scuttlebut is that Demon in a Bottle was at least proposed to be integrated into the Iron Man Triology, but ultimately dropped, cause hey... it's a lot easier to punch a supervillian named Whiplash then Alcoholism.

On the other hand, they touched on mental illness in IM3, which is about as intangible an obstacle as alcoholism.

Haha yes, that is true. But I think there were hints in IM1 and IM2 about his alcoholism but then dropped in IM3.

I did appreciate that they gave him PTSD to work through (and his character growth through the whole trilogy is great) but I was hoping that since in the comic-universe he battled with alcoholism, that the movies would touch on it too. I've heard that because Disney bought Marvel that it's the reason they dropped that plot.

I also would have liked to see him deal with alcoholism, particularly since it would dove-tail very well with mental illness. And yeah, it was probably Disney's decision to drop the alcoholism thread.
