That's actually used as an excuse? That .. that makes less sense than just having it be a revealing costume. What's the excuse for every OTHER scantily-clad superheroine?

Yep. She even says it in canon.

I'm rather torn on the costume... Sometimes, it can be well drawn, but some artists see "boob window" and turn it into "boob bay window". Sometimes, she owned it and made it look empowering, sometimes she's just her to be leered at. The artists really make or break her costume, really. On the other hand, her new post-reboot costume was atrocious.

Because some of them like to dress the way they do?(Starfire) Because some of them use their sexuality. (Emma Frost, Mystique) Because some of them have fur and don't like to wear clothes (Tigra) Because some of them live in Hot places with little need for clothes.(Shanna and others) A great majority of the others dress in the same full body spandex as the men.

What I was really asking was why they felt the need to make an excuse at all. Most of the revealing costumes are just .. kinda there.

There isn't an excuse for the other super-heroine costumes. That is what makes Power Girl unique. In-canon WW, Batgirl, Huntress, et al don't have breasts that are outwith the normal range. They are only drawn as that. In-canon Power Girl is large breasted. She is a super hero with a non-standard body type that gets mentioned as such.

As a girl who got her growth spurt early, and was cursed by the boob fairy to have eternal back ache, having someone like Power Girl who was supposed to be big boobed because she was big boobed and wasn't afraid to flaunt it for her own reasons and not for any man's enjoyment in-canon was a blessing. Power Girl's boobs helped me get through junior high, and not for the same reason it helped teenage boys get through it. I don't care how problematic some people find her costume and appearance, and how liking her and it makes me a bad feminist. I love Power Girl and her boob window. She's my super-hero and she is way more super than the others to me.

Nothing wrong at all with loving the boob window. Just if somebody's going to claim it's a space to be filled, THAT MAKES NO SENSE. Take a sewing class fer crying out loud.

Why do you assume it is literal? Christ, it was obviously a figure of speech. She isn't going to super-crochet something in, it was this with the hole until I get something that makes me feel whole then I'll switch to a costume with that on.

Can we dump this literalistic asspergers crap.

Superhero grade spandex ain't cheap, sugar. Unless you're batman you make your costumes last and multitask.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-29 11:16 pm (UTC)(link)
They have a giant orbiting space station, I think they have budget for new costumes.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 12:12 am (UTC)(link)
Depends. Does the Administrative budget cover costumes or is that more of a personal expense? Is there a list of League-approved tailors? Costume insurance? Suppose you have a preferred designer who's not on the list?

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 12:37 am (UTC)(link)
It probably comes under "miscellaneous expenses, pay up Clark or I write to Perry and give him a real scoop for once starting with how unethical it is for a reporter to interview himself".

It's the excuse I find stupid. I get that it's not meant to be literal, but it still sounds stupid. Power Girl is fine. She'd have more impact as a character if women weren't routinely drawn with G-cups in comics, but I have nothing against a busty heroine.
