At this point, the boob window seems to have become the thing about Power Girl that tells readers "This character is Power Girl." (As opposed to, say, her abilities, personality, or even setting. There are multiple different arguments you could construct from this.)

I'm a woman and I like the boob window and her large breasts. Most comic book women are over-inflated and scantily dressed, but we pretend they aren't. That it is just an art style artifact that makes them look so large. With Pee-Gee we have a character who is large chested because she actually does have large breasts, and she is scantily dressed because she doesn't have any issues about her body and showing that she is completelly comfortable about her body. I find that empowering, I wish we had more super-heroines who were like that.

None of that touches on the fact that the "excuse" isn't feasible.

1) She isn't a real character - she's made up - a man decided to do the boob window thing.
2) He came up with a shitty excuse - instead of having that be the way she wants to dress.

It was a joke. She's a fun character mostly put in comical situations. Something we don't get much of anymore.

Comic art rarely seems to understand how fabric and clothing actually work. Even when a superheroine is completely covered up, her costume may not only be skin-tight, but skin-tight in a way that wouldn't actually happen in reality, with her breasts looking like perfectly-defined globes that the fabric molds around rather than simply stretching over. (There are many other clothing sins that affect heroes of both sexes, but as a person with breasts who wears clothes, this was particularly bugs me.)

That's actually used as an excuse? That .. that makes less sense than just having it be a revealing costume. What's the excuse for every OTHER scantily-clad superheroine?

I remember kind of actually liking this excuse a bit the first time I read it because I didn't know anything about Power Girl, and the idea that resonated most with me was that anyone part of the Superman family has to feel pressure from the legacy and have a hard time establishing their own identity. Though in terms of that particular struggle, I prefer Supergirl in her angry, rebellious phase (when she was roommates with Captain Boomerang Jr and was too much of a wildcard for even the Outsiders).

But yeah, it did always kinda bug me because, what...why would you leave a big empty space there? How are you going to put a logo there? Just...hope that it fits the hole perfectly? Why would you cut out the fabric? That has to be the least efficient way to leave space ever. No.


Plus, yeah, it is kind of a stupid as heck reason. I prefer the reason of "I'm Power Girl, these are my boobs, I quite like them, and now I will be punching you. Hard."

I like the boob window. It can and has been drawn horribly, but I think Conner established it as fun and sexy. Honestly, it's not even that bizarre of a concept--I see people wearing shirts with a little bit of a cleavage window all the time, and it doesn't look terrible. There is, of course, the point that people get to choose what they wear and characters don't, but Peej is one of those characters that it works for--her attitude isn't one of pure sex appeal (which can make skin-baring costume seem sleazier), but of power and pure confidence. I kind of like that, at least in the Conner/Palmiotti days, her size wasn't just taken for granted the way that most large-breasted comic ladies just happen to be suspiciously well-endowed regardless of who they are, depending on who's drawing them. She had the attitude of a girl who has been large-breasted all her life and who's comfortable with that. I don't really know how to explain it.

Whatever.

I like the boob window.

But yeah, that is a stupid reason.

I remember once, when scans_daily was still on lj (and lj wasn't a crapsack in general), someone posted a scan in the comments about 90's powergirl saying that her lack of symbol/boobs window was because she like it like that, and if anyone else didn't liked it then they would have to deal with it. And then there was the original post, where PG was crying because she "couldn't find a symbol yet somethingsomething superman etc."

And now I wish I could find that particular scan boohoohoo.
