Pretty much this, in the 80's and 90's the idea of a supernatural masquerade made sense because video recording equipment was unwieldy and good equipment was either noticeable or required setup. Nowadays there's no way you could get away with something like that without hiding the supernatural behind some kind of Harry potter style barrier that keeps normal people out. With current technology there are now more cell phones than there are people on the planet and most of them have some kind of picture or video recording ability. Imagine trying to hide something when pretty much every third person has the ability to either take pictures or video of it.

This is made even worse if the government isn't involved as there is now quite a few very technologically advanced countries that you have to fool and these countries tend to have a crapload of surveillance methods that outstrip the already ridiculous levels of civilian technology. I know it's suspension Of disbelief and everything, but it would be interesting to see a show about a supernatural masquerade becoming increasingly hard to maintain in the face of normal human technology advancement and all the drama it would entail when the YouTube age unintentionally blows the whole the whole thing wide open

It's going to depend where you live too. Where I live there's like no surveillance equipment on the streets or even in most stores other than the mall.

Even in rural areas pretty much everyone has cell phones capable of picture and video as well as at least some Internet access that can get info out of that area. Plus pretty much every gas station has CCTV and every cop car In an industrialized country has a dash cam. Plus there's the fact that every police station is going to have networked instant access to other stations and even federal databases if we are talking about the us (and there are now centralized law enforcement database and information sharing across all the EU countries).

So even in a really rural area there is unprecedented capacity for recording, surveillance, and data sharing compared to even just 10 years ago. It may not be much compared to current monitoring in places like London, but there is way more capacity for leaking information instantly in places like bumfark nowhere than there was in major cities 20 years ago.
