I don't overly love him but I am looking forward to seeing where his story goes, but I just enjoy more side-characters and world building. I also would have been happy with some of the other characters from the book making it into the film but in the end Jackson didn't have the same amount of time for LoTR that he got for the Hobbit, and while I like Tom Bombadill he may not have really fit the tone of the LoTR films. But alas we shall never know.

Yeah, Old man Willow aside, the Bombadill side-story just did not fit the mood of LotR. I always got the feeling it was written in there while Tolkien was still making the transition from tale for younger readers to serious adult epic (like the sapient fox when the Hobbits were leaving the shire) and because it set up the magic blades and barrow wight stuff he just kept it in (and that Tolkien just plain liked the silly jolly english pub tales feel of it). It definitely felt like an artifact of an earlier draft though.
