The difference being Jackson had one film for Fellowship and three for the Hobbit. So obviously he can fit in more side characters.

This - He had one film for each book of the original LOTR trilogy, whereas now he has three films for only one book that's smaller than the others.

It is amazing he got LotR down into a trilogy, even if it was one with three three hour movies.

Am I the only one who is glad Tom Bombadil was cut? I nearly stopped reading FotR the first time when I got to his part. As it was, it took me months to pick up the book again and I only got back into it by skipping all of Tom's scenes and going back to read them after I was done with the whole trilogy.

I thought this was a common opinion in certain LotR/Hobbit groups? So far I've been rather neutral about his inclusion, maybe a bit on the positive, but that's mostly because he's played by Sylvester McCoy and I have a soft spot for Doctor Who alumni. I just want to see them all forge on and do amazing things.

I'm not overtly attached to him either tbh, but I do like that we're going to be getting more story and more character development, so I can't complain. I'm looking forward to the 'extra' stuff regardless.

I disagree. I thought his character was a useful way to introduce the Necromancer so that Gandalf's off-screen scenes from the book could be in the film.

[Picture is the wizard Radagast the Brown from the film "The Hobbit". He is an older man wearing brown robes and a hat that appear to be made from fur and various fabrics. The hat has small wings to the sides and to the front, and a long, thin brown feather is inserted in it. He has a slightly long, graying brown beard. He is holding a scepter of sorts made from the branch of a tree that has some sort of aquamarine-colored gem inserted on the top. He's standing in a forest.]

I thought all of his scenes were an embarrassing waste of time. And I dread the possibility of this character turning up in the other movies.

Peter Jackson cuts Tom Bombadil and Goldberry from Lord of the Rings, but gives us THIS guy??

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved his scenes, they really gave a feeling that in the Hobbit the age of magic and whimsy was still alive. It helps separate it from the more funereal tone of LotR which was about the ending of the age of magic.

I don't overly love him but I am looking forward to seeing where his story goes, but I just enjoy more side-characters and world building. I also would have been happy with some of the other characters from the book making it into the film but in the end Jackson didn't have the same amount of time for LoTR that he got for the Hobbit, and while I like Tom Bombadill he may not have really fit the tone of the LoTR films. But alas we shall never know.

Aww, I love Radagast. I've always been curious about him, and I'm glad he showed up in the Hobbit. I love Sylvester McCoy, too.

(Anonymous) 2013-06-30 10:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked him. He seemed fitting for a story from a more whimsical age in Middle-Earth, while in LOTR Tom Bombadil stuck out like a sore thumb because the overall story was a about war and a word in decline.

Eh, I don't remember that guy [it's been years since I read anything Tolkien], but I *really* did not like Tom Bombadil. He always just seemed like an obnoxious filler character me. -shrugs-

On one hand, I sorta agree. On the other hand, Sylvester McCoy!

Bombadil was so useless in the books. He brought the story to a screeching halt, it's a good thing he wasn't in the movies.

Ye-eeah.

When Gandalf mentioned Radagast, I had a quiet little chuckle, because it was kind of a funny little, "Oh, are they all great wizards?" set up and Gandalf made that face, and anyone familiar with Radagast got to think, "Oh, Radagast, you woodland hippie."

And then he showed up, and I still thought, okay, kinda funny. A little odd that we're going to make such a big deal over whether or not a hedgehog lives or dies, but okay.

And then the rabbit sled. And that was ridiculous, but funny.

And then I realized we were supposed to be taking that chase scene seriously.

I keep saying it--what I want, after all three movies have come out, is for some talented fan to cut them neatly into a half-an-hour film that covers more or less what was in the books. Something neat and tight, and easily watched.

LEAVE RADAGAST ALONE!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 02:28 am (UTC)(link)
I don't get the Radagast hate. I think he's very endearing. Not all wizards can be either evil like Saruman or wise like Gandalf. Some wizards are stoners and that's okay.

I like Mr McCoy, so I'm biased. And his description of how he finally got cast (he was nearly Bilbo in LOTR), and what it was like to be painted with so much poo, was amusing.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 06:59 am (UTC)(link)
His scenes were some of the only watchable parts of that bloated disaster of a movie, and the only thing I don't hate Jackson for changing. But I'm used to disagreeing with fandom on this one...

I found him quite endearing (Aww look he's caring for the animals!) in a slightly cringey way (Oh look he has bird poo down the side of his face).

And the rabbit sled was glorious.

(+ I physically cannot hate Sylvester McCoy in anything.)

I think he's irritating & the bird shit in his hair & on his face is disgusting.

I thought Tom Bombadil was terribly annoying as well though. I'm glad they didn't have him in LOTR.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-01 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
No. Radagast is cute. Be quiet. I wish we could've had Tom Bombadil and Goldberry too, though. Honestly it's a shame we didn't have this multiple movies for one book thing sooner. It would've helped the LotR and Harry Potter films a lot.
