The wizard character that was out of place to me was Chris Lee. I love Lee's work, but the guy is just way to sinister for that movie. I know it was to link Saruman's fall (and old Eyeball overlord) more firmly into the mythos in a way that really wasn't present in the novel, but Chris Lee was creepier than the Witch King.

Which is rather sad because he's a super hardcore Tolkien fan that wanted to be Gandalf. Looks like they thought he was too creepy as well.

I dunno, I always thought Book!Gandalf had a sinister undertone to his character. Chris Lee would have made a very interesting choice as Gandalf, and been a very different one from grumpy uncle McKellen!Gandalf, but I think he would have made a great Gandalf. Shame he never got the chance.

I agree. And since everyone's already aware that Saruman ends up corrupted and evil, setting him up as neutral yet unpleasant like they seemed to be attempting doesn't really work. Lee is wonderful as Saruman but sadly doesn't fit that well into the movie.

It would have worked so much better if he'd been warm and friendly instead. That would have given such a shocking contrast to the man in LotR and been a horrible lesson in the seductiveness of evil and just how slippery the slippery slope can be.

Yes! Especially since in the books he was described as extremely charming, and that was part of what him being evil so scary.
