Your friends sound like shitty people. I'm surprised you don't get these kinds of feeling around them constantly now instead of the character. I would. My advice is you should drop them like moldy yogurt and get new friends who aren't assholes.

It really sucks that the character is ruined for you. Maybe you can get new memories of her and with fandom so that they can replace the bad memories? I dunno. I hope the best for you, OP.

Give them the fandom finger. Write a fic with your Hispanic take on the character and tell them to have fun visiting their Aunt Paula.

I once told a small group of friends about a piece of headcanon I have for a character in our fandom: that I believe that the character has a Hispanic ethnic background. (The character is animated, and her ethnicity has never been specified, but she is clearly a Person of Color). My friends responded by unleashing a tirade of racist jokes targeted at the character, and acting incredulous that someone would think she's Hispanic--as if someone being of Hispanic descent is the most absurd thing they could image.

My confession is that this experience has completely ruined the character for me. I can't look at her anymore without remembering that incident and how angry and upset I felt. I know it sounds stupid and petty of me, but a part of me wants to drop the fandom over it.

Sorry. Just had to get this out. It happened a while back, but it's been bothering me ever since.

This reminds me of the time a friend of mine flipped his shit when I mentioned that I thought a (faceless silent protagonist in fully concealing body armor) character named "Ramirez" might be hispanic.

No he had to be white! (According to said friend.) If he was hispanic they would have said something!

Speaking of having POC headcanons for characters, people tend to go "lol black hedgehog" when it comes to the guy in my icon, but I always thought that if Shadow was human, that he'd be Hispanic. He's clearly a lot tanner than Sonic, so I can't see him being pasty white. Here's a pic of a racial diverse Sonic cast, to give a better idea of how I see him.
