Why so sad? Turn that frown upside down and think about all the new discoveries you still have waiting for you! So you missed it when it was new, oh well. Discovering music is like a fun treasure hunt, no matter if it's new or old.

You weren't wasting your time. You were listening to music, and now you're listening to other music that you like. There's nothing wrong with popular music. Popular music is awesome.

+1 though fandom tends to side-eye you, hard, if you listen to anything other than whatever the flavour of the moment is.

Before I GAFIAted to the back of beyond, the cool thing was JPop. Now it's KPop. THESE PEOPLE ARE MONOLINGUAL ENGLISH AND THEY LISTEN TO LYRICS THEY DON'T HAVE A HOPE IN HELL OF UNDERSTANDING THESE WEEABOO BOITOIS COULD BE SINGING ABOUT MURDERING THEIR GRANDMAS AND ENJOYING THEIR LIVERS WITH FAVA BEANS AND A NICE CHIANTI FFS

Ah. Ahem.

TL;DR: Anon got strange looks and much derision when asked at a con what their favourite bands were, and anon made the deadliest social mistake of replying, "Blue Rodeo and Goo Goo Dolls"

Except when they were new you had no idea they were going to still be around now. That's why I didn't watch Supernatural from the beginning -- I was sure it was going to be canceled within a month, so why bother even trying it?

[Picture is a child lying on the floor listening to old vinyl records of music.]

I wish I hadn't wasted so much time in the nineties only listening to popular music. There were so many bands I love now that I could have listened to when they were new. At least I can spend hours catching up.

I am 99,99999% certain that the image used in the secret is from REM's music video "It's The End of the World As We Know It (And I Feel Fine)":

I can't find that shot, though, and the boy is wearing different clothes?

The image is a still from the film An Education.

This.

Many of my now favorite metal bands got their start in the '90s when I was in high school. But back then, I held a seething hatred of metal, because it was "that music all those bullies listen to." Five years later, separated from those people and all those bad memories, I got into various metal bands myself, and now I'm a big fan of the genre.

Not only that, but a lot of those favorite bands were--and in some ways still are--very obscure by American standards, and it took the internet to finally discover them, something we didn't even have in our house for much of my high school years anyway.

10 I kinda feel the same way but damn it I TRIED and mp3s did not exist and the radio sucked where I lived. There were no good record stores in my area either. I used to be super obsessed with Smashing Pumpkins because I had no idea what shoegaze was and gaaaaah it sucks knowing how much good music was out there that I missed out on

What kind of 90s music?

Since no one will see this comment (and the 90s are a distant memory) I feel safe saying I only like two or three Pavement songs, maybe four at most.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I actually feel the same way. I sometimes wish I could go back in time and make my 90's self listen to the GOOD 90's music that existed, instead of the crap I listened to back then.
