Is this a case of shipping rare/unpopular pairings, or a case of just shipping in obscure/non-existent fandoms? Because there's a big difference! If it's the former, there's always a chance for you to convert some fellow fans -- write fics or draw fanart, post about why you like the pairing, etc.

I feel the same way. Sometimes I'm lucky if I find three other people who ship some of the same pairs as I do.

just add "in an active fandom" and that's me, too, anon. I was actually thinking of making a similar secret because I'm finally watching something current and guess what? My ship's unpopular ;_; There's even a part of the fandom that hates half of the pairing and I have no idea why.

At least a friend of mine ships it, too ._.

I feel you, OP. I even ship two popular pairings, but I hate 90% of the tropes for them and it's almost impossible for me to find fics I enjoy. The only good thing is that there's at least enjoyable fanart for these ships. But it would be so nice, just once, to ship a popular ship and to ship it the way everyone else ships it and read any of the thousands of fics out there and enjoy it.

Ah... yeah, I recently got into a fandom where my favorite ship is the second most popular ship in the fandom (if not the most popular). It's... really nice. I'd forgotten what it was like not to just settle for almost always reading ships I find mediocre just because that's what most of the fic is for.

Trust me, depending on the fandom and the ship...you're better off shipping the rare pairs.

That's very true in some cases. Less of the... hivemind trope writing? Less chance that you'll get pounced on if your headcanons don't match the majority? At least that's how it seems to me.

Yeah, I feel that one. I sometimes find the major pairings tolerable or understandable, but they never seem to hit my shipping buttons.

You say that now. But I shipped a popular pairing in my first fandom, and let me tell you...it never happened again. Shipping a popular pairing just once is like the worst thing ever. :(

Sadly, you don't get to decide which pairings you like. You ship what you ship. But yeah, maybe someday it'll happen to you...

I ship mostly rare pairings, but recently I got into the most popular ship of my new fandom and God, it is like the most awesome thing ever (I'd never been so spoiled in my life!). I'm aware though, it was mostly a fortituous thing, and the posibility of me finding that ship was very small. However, don't lose faith of it happening someday!

yep. although lately ive been leaning more toward preferring semi-popular ships. i find there to have balance of good fanwork material with less rabid fellow fans of the ship.
