follow sootyowl's advice, but also:

that moment when you imagine the conversation? stop. don't imagine anything. just reply or move on with something else. that imagination is part of the problem, since it gives you a bit of emotional satisfaction from pretending you did a thing (there are studies about this) and makes you less hungry for the satisfaction of the real thing, since in your mind you already "did the hard work"
