This is assuming their off-screen relationship is the same as their on-screen relationship. They may be playing characters with different personalities than their own and therefore the dynamics are completely different. Besides, good acting isn't necessarily about being unlike yourself all the time. If a character happens to be similar to you and you aren't given the freedom to change or interpret things differently, then that's just the way it is.

This. Because you know Captain Kirk really well does not mean you know William Shatner at all, even though he likely uses parts of his real personality in his acting. In fact, I think that must be one of the more frustrating/weird things about acting - all these people who feel that they know you, they KNOW you, because they've been touched by a character you've played.
