Because you know Captain Kirk really well does not mean you know William Shatner at all, even though he likely uses parts of his real personality in his acting. In fact, I think that must be one of the more frustrating/weird things about acting - all these people who feel that they know you, they KNOW you, because they've been touched by a character you've played.
