(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)It's such an arbitrary societal norm, too. MY brothers grew up with big sisters, they are totally cool with (not to mention good at!) hugs, there's advantages to not spending your whole childhood with people your own age and gender. XD
If you want something opposite, OP, you can try some media from Asian countries! IDK as much about Japan, but in China and especially Korea it's normal and acceptable for men to show physical affection. I mean, the big fandoms are kpop and there's a good bit of over and above homoerotic fanservice, but even walking down the street you see straight guys hugging or holding hands (or beating each other up with love. Sigh, dudes, haha)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 09:23 pm (UTC)(link)But plenty of people in Japan touch and it completely depends on where they live, their job, how they grew up, their ages, their personal preferences. They just don't make a huge loud fuss over it when they do with lots of noise (and even then, some do), but your first paragraph there is ridiculous
They're not some mystical culture. Teenagers shove and joke with each other, couples hold hands, old friends hug each other, family members hug after they turn 10 (wtf outdated and arbitrary rules there), people walk arm in arm, girls play that foot under table games.
I get that you're currently living in Japan and are judged a little harsher on standards due to being a foreigner but take a breath on on the japanese knowledge-policing. Just because you haven't seen it doesn't mean it doesn't happen and quite a few of us have been to japan.
