Yes.

This is why I found the hug between Harry and Ron in Deathly Hallows even more gratifying than Ron and Hermione kissing. Because that was really what I've wanted to see all this time. I hate how there's so little affectionate physical contact between guys in media.

(If I ever see Stefan and Damon hug -- in the present -- you will probably hear me screaming with glee, no matter what part of the world you're in.)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
I would like some more to if it wasn't for a certain portion of the fan population who would take away from that, that the characters are secretly romantically in love with each other. Some fans take it too far and start harassing the writers as to why aren't those two characters romantically paired on the show. And then some fans take it even a step further and declare any and all people who don't ship those two "homophobic." Yikes.

And all because one guy wanted to give a hug to his friend.

I don't think this should be. Friends should be able to hug friends. Yes, even a gay man should be able to give a platonic hug to his gay friend without everyone yelling, "NOW KISS!"

It makes me wonder for all the people who do this, do they want to sleep with all of their friends in real life?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:33 pm (UTC)(link)
What is wrong with shipping friends? It doesn't mean that hug automatically equals romance, but close friends can fall in love. And it is okay to ship relationships that are just friendships in canon

I reckon if people wanna ship some characters, regardless of the genders involved, they will be excited by any physical affection between those characters. It's not as though if having two male characters never hug will discourage any shippers.

The fan population you're talking about who harass writers and call people homophobic for not shipping the same ship - they're just idiots. And some people will always be idiots. I don't think a few more hugs will make much difference there.

People probably wouldn't be so quick to read in subtext if our culture wasn't so EW NO about male affection.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
uh, people are going to ship anyway. There's always someone who's going to take it too far, because there's always crazies. Adding more affection won't be giving any extra excuses

Your last line is just dumb and as hyperbolic as the same people you object to.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 07:57 am (UTC)(link)
I'll accept this argument the minute a man and woman in anything are allowed to relate to each other without it being forced into a romance.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 04:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes because this is an actual problem in society, not the homophobic DON'T HUG, YOU'RE NOT FAGGOTS mindset

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 09:03 pm (UTC)(link)
you know people can separate fiction from reality and what adds to ship fodder irl doesn't correlate to how they view romance?

it's not homophobic to not ship them. saying that guys can't show affection because the dreaded YAOI FANGIRLS might ship them, why can't two people if the same gender just be friiiiiieeeends? that is.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
You couldn't find a more recent example? Like say maybe something reflective of current portrayals in today's society instead of something that was reflective of how the majority of American society viewed such things 15 years ago? Because that would give you a lot more credence.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:44 pm (UTC)(link)
Came here to say the same. I can't remember seeing this in anything recently.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 12:33 am (UTC)(link)
Merlin? There was a scene where Merlin goes to hug Arthur and Arthur throws up his hands and is like "NOOOO, we don't do that" and they both back away from each other like they're armed.

Honestly, I think it's gotten a little worse now than it was before, because now there's more awareness of gestures and behaviors looking "gay", whereas before there was just an obvious assumption that of course this behavior wasn't gay, because there's no possible way these characters could be anything but straight. I was watching MASH recently, and a lot of the interactions between Hawkeye and Trapper were so ho yay, they'd probably be cut in anything modern for fear of giving the shippers Ideas.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:37 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, I don't get angry, but I do roll my eyes. Stupid Western societal norms telling guys that you only hug people of the opposite sex or people you're attracted to. (IT does make me laugh every time in Grease when the two guys hug and then break apart self-consciously to comb their hair and act like it never happened lol)

It's such an arbitrary societal norm, too. MY brothers grew up with big sisters, they are totally cool with (not to mention good at!) hugs, there's advantages to not spending your whole childhood with people your own age and gender. XD

If you want something opposite, OP, you can try some media from Asian countries! IDK as much about Japan, but in China and especially Korea it's normal and acceptable for men to show physical affection. I mean, the big fandoms are kpop and there's a good bit of over and above homoerotic fanservice, but even walking down the street you see straight guys hugging or holding hands (or beating each other up with love. Sigh, dudes, haha)

I think the fact that it's a joke is what makes it so bad.

[personal profile] transcriptanon 2013-07-02 11:40 pm (UTC)(link)
[Picture is Topanga from the TV show "Boy Meets World" cringing and looking at Cory, who is blissfully hugging a man wearing a black leather jacket. There is the caption "Stop it. You're boys." in the image.]

I know it's usually just meant to be a joke, but I get intentionally angry whenever fiction portrays guys showing physical affection for each other as unnatural, ridiculous, gross, immature or lame.

I get that. That's why I'm always happy when hugs happen on Supernatural. Hugging your friend/brother/whatever is something the West has problems portraying without a "no homo" recently. It's disheartening to see.

Agree. It makes me especially irritated because all my guy friends hug all the time, they were always physically close and easy with each other (as were us girls) and it was 'the norm'. Plus my dad didn't hesitate to hug or kiss my brothers, and any kind of 'we're guys, we don't hug/show emotion' kind of bullshite makes me wanna smack people.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 08:00 am (UTC)(link)
It's funny how very, very rarely there's affection between men on TV. There's this really moving part in Farscape during I think the first season finale where Crichton's been tortured and Stark is comforting him, and it struck me how you almost never see that.

Oh hay. Don't forget the boys on "Psych" are allowed to be affectionate without the "stop you're boys" crap. Another reason to love that show. :)
