I know when I've seen a character build that someone else has done that I think is pretty awesome I've gotten the urge to test it out myself(not in the same campaign mind you), so it could be that he just thinks your idea is really cool? But it is annoying you so talking to him about it and letting him know could help, he might not know that he's bugging you with it after all.

He definitely knows. When he changed his character the first time I made a huge stink about it but he just ignored me. And our DM is really friendly/nice and wants to let us do our characters how we want to do (though I wish he wouldn't, urgh). Then when I was informed about the animal situation, I raised a big stink again, but no one cared. He claims he chose that because it was the "strongest."

Since I submitted the secret, there have been 3 sessions and I haven't played any of them, so I guess that's that :/

Oh man that's really sucky OP, especially since you've stopped playing something that you love when he's the one being douchey. Ugh I am sorry. :(

It's also really unfair that your DM isn't really putting their foot down about it too, I can understand why they're going with that character creation approach but for a player like that it only helps to enable their asshattery(way too many experiences with this in the past).

I hope you can find another group, or they'll realise that they don't want to loose you and make him change.
