This is a really really really far long shot, but is this person not quite as well-versed in your native language as you are? When I was about 12, a friend of mine would come over and we'd play Barbies. She'd frustrate the hell out of me because her Barbie would just repeat what my Barbie said instead of answering (though I didn't say anything about it). It took me years to realize that even though she had no accent when speaking English, the fact that she had immigrated from an Eastern-European country only a year before was hugely responsible for her lack of creativity when playing with me.

I feel bad that I thought she was kind of stupid now...

You need to tell this guy this is annoying to you and he needs to knock it off. If he won't, tell your DM that this is annoying you, and the guy needs to knock it off or you're leaving. Hopefully this will work, but if it doesn't, you should think about finding a different group.

The DM knows that it bothers me but he won't put his foot down. First I was mad about his character change (and made sure everyone knew it), but I wasn't able to play in the session where he also changes into my animal, and the DM told me later, "You're going to be mad, he changes into [your animal] now!"

The problem is I technically came into the group later where this friend was there at the very beginning (therefore I feel I have less rights in controlling the game), he is good friends with the DM, and the DM in general likes to give us pretty strong control over our own characters.

There have already been about 3 sessions since I submitted this secret and I have not played in any of them, so I guess it's over :(

Have you talked to your DM about it? I should think a good DM would tell the copy-cat to cut that shit out because having two characters with the exact same skill-set makes for a more difficult game for the players. If your DM knows how much it's bothering, they should try to sort it out and reach a compromise.

But if nothing's done, please don't feel bad about leaving the game. D&D and other RP games are supposed to be about pretendy fun times, so if you're not having fun, it's not worth staying.

I hope things get sorted for you and that the fun comes back.

He sounds like an ass, but it's up to you to tell him to knock it off.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:35 pm (UTC)(link)
That's... kinda weird. On his part, I mean. Just... what.

Anyway, don't you want characters with diverse skill sets in a party? Why would anyone want their character to be a carbon copy of someone else's in the same party?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:38 pm (UTC)(link)
Kill his character. Maybe your character is suspicious of this behavior and decides to strike the first blow.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-02 11:45 pm (UTC)(link)
I think that's a neat idea! She doesn't even necessarily have to kill his character, but making his mimicry a plot point is an interesting and creative way to call him out on what he's doing

I know when I've seen a character build that someone else has done that I think is pretty awesome I've gotten the urge to test it out myself(not in the same campaign mind you), so it could be that he just thinks your idea is really cool? But it is annoying you so talking to him about it and letting him know could help, he might not know that he's bugging you with it after all.

OP

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 02:24 am (UTC)(link)
He definitely knows. When he changed his character the first time I made a huge stink about it but he just ignored me. And our DM is really friendly/nice and wants to let us do our characters how we want to do (though I wish he wouldn't, urgh). Then when I was informed about the animal situation, I raised a big stink again, but no one cared. He claims he chose that because it was the "strongest."

Since I submitted the secret, there have been 3 sessions and I haven't played any of them, so I guess that's that :/

The problem is you let him live.

[personal profile] insanenoodlyguy 2013-07-02 11:55 pm (UTC)(link)
Kill him. It's the only way. I assume if his character was made after yours he'd be weaker then yours.

Either go corrupted or go paranoid. This guy is wayyy too like you. Is he a doppleganger? Is he after your soul? Some kinda magic Doppleganger who's not very bright? That's it isn't it? DIE MONSTER!

Whatever route you go with it, you must walk the path of the PK. If that fucks with the DM, well... DM deserves it for letting this bullshit go on so long.

Be the Old Man Henderson of the party! Channel the forces of chaos and plot-derailment until you are unique again! Or dead yourself. Then make a new character.

Firstly, you need to talk to your DM, anon. Your DM is supposed to agree/allow character changes and that sort of thing. If your DM is not doing what they're supposed to be doing, which is managing the group and party dynamics as well as telling the story, then you have bigger problems than just someone copying your character.

Secondly, you need to talk to the person. Tell them that while you're flattered that they think your character and his/her abilities is worthwhile enough to copy, it's getting a bit old and it means that there's not enough variety in the group. So they need to stop it now and think up their own characters. Offer your assistance to help them create their own unique character. And if they continue, tell them flat out to stop. Preferably in front of the rest of your group and your DM so they cotton on to what is happening.

And if all else fails, a character duel to the death is in order.

Take it up with the DM who, if they are halfway competent, should be docking this jackass XP for total unoriginality. Failing that, find a better group.

If you're in the US, you guys seem to run things way different from us in the UK. It seems like you guys try to deal with/work around problem players, but here in the UK, at least in my experience, there is nothing wrong with kicking people out of your group. Everyone was a bad roleplayer once and should be given a chance, but if they don't shape up when they've had that chance then they should be given the boot for the sake of other players.

[Picture is an image with the logotype of the pen and paper roleplaying game "Dungeons & Dragons" on an image that looks like very old, yellowed paper. There is a large sad face emoticon painted on the right by the secret maker.]

The entire reason I started playing Dungeons & Dragons was because I liked the idea of being a fantasy character; something other than a boring human. But a friend in my group has been copying EVERYTHING I do. He switched his character to be the same as mine (and therefore has the same spells and abilities as me), and now during our last session even transforms into the same animal as I do, when that was totally MY thing that was a huge part of my character's backstory.

His copying is taking out all of the fun I had feeling unique. I know it's just pretend, but even so. At this point I'm ready to quit the game because it isn't fun anymore.

Am I reading you right that he re-wrote a character in play instead of starting a new one? Wait, how did he even do that? Is 4th edition even more broken than I thought?

My solution would be to suggest that you switch systems (I'd suggest GURPS if you like crunchy rules or FATE if you like flexible, cinematic ones) to one where that wouldn't be possible - changing a character like that shouldn't happen without years of in-character work and change (and a buttload of experience). If necessary, offer to GM for a while. Or you could quit and join my GURPS game; we could use another player, and non-human-pretending-to-be-human-to-fit-into-modern-society would work great with the current campaign.

I can't help but think this is as much the fault of the GM as the person doing it. A good GM is supposed to make sure a group is well balanced--if one character is clearly copying another character, unless that person has taken the GM aside privately and said "Hey, I'm secretly angling my character to betray and 'replace' X's position on the team" then the GM needs to step in.

Perhaps you could talk to the GM about it, and how you're worried that what the other person is doing is throwing off team dynamics?

Yeah sorry, but your GM sucks donkey ass. I can't believe he's going all buddy "Oh you're going to be ~so mad~!" with you if HE'S the one who has to approve these things anyway.

How did the player make these changes anyway without anyone calling him out on it? Like did no one go "...Isn't that OP's thing?" at one point?
