Am I reading you right that he re-wrote a character in play instead of starting a new one? Wait, how did he even do that? Is 4th edition even more broken than I thought?

My solution would be to suggest that you switch systems (I'd suggest GURPS if you like crunchy rules or FATE if you like flexible, cinematic ones) to one where that wouldn't be possible - changing a character like that shouldn't happen without years of in-character work and change (and a buttload of experience). If necessary, offer to GM for a while. Or you could quit and join my GURPS game; we could use another player, and non-human-pretending-to-be-human-to-fit-into-modern-society would work great with the current campaign.
