[Keeping Up Appearances]

Rock on.

I always hated it that Hyacinth never got to win at the end of any episode. I admire her enthusiasm for life and dedication to her (admittedly often ridiculous) goals.

My late grandmother was an American version of her. In the crazy, annoying way. Even down to how they said their husband's names when summoning them! (And by necessity, my grandpa is a bit like Richard, bless him.)

You know, it's actually a pretty achievable goal, so...go for it.

I always felt so bad for her. She tried SO HARD. Granted, she was trying for crazy things, but damn. The sheer work she put into her crazy was impressive.

Same here. Though I don't think it was crazy, as such. I just think Hyacinth is fundamentally bad at people. She had an idea of the life she wanted, the social structure of it, but it seems like the idea came from a TV show or something and she had no idea how to make it work in real life with real people. But she just. Keeps. Trying. No matter what. Nothing she does works and no-one ever reacts to her the way she expects them to, but damned if she'll let that stop her.

I think it's mostly that all her life she's wanted something she doesn't actually understand, but she'll keep fighting for it anyway because it is what she's wanted all her life.

In some ways she's pitiful, and painful to watch (and live with). But there's also a lot to respect in that, really.

[Picture is Hyacinth Bucket, a character from the British sitcom TV series "Keeping Up Appearances". She is a middle-aged woman with short styled light brown hair. She is wearing a white blouse with a print of dark pink flowers and leaves, white gloves, and a matching pink hat.]

Hyacinth has been my model of sophistication since I was a little girl. I still aspire to hold a candlelit supper that she would approve of.

I watched this show with my grandma. She passed away when I was in 3rd grade and she looked a little like Hyacinth but now in my memories she looks exactly like her. Weird.

You rock that candlelight supper Anon Bucket! :D

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:50 am (UTC)(link)
As long as you're nicer to your husband if you marry (actually listen to him once in awhile), I think that's a cool goal. :) Her plans aren't the bad thing, just how she sometimes treats people.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 03:36 am (UTC)(link)
You rock on, OP! And don't forget to do her waterside supper with riparian entertainment!

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 07:58 am (UTC)(link)
I have no idea what this is but that's awesome and her hat is the best.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 01:43 pm (UTC)(link)
It's 'Keeping Up Appearances' a show about a woman, Hyacinth Bucket (pronounced 'Bouquet', she insists) who grew up in a poor house but keeps shooting for no less than aristocracy, dragging her husband, Richard, along with her. She gets REALLY OVERENTHUSIASTIC about it to the point where everyone who's remotely upperclass is terrified of her. It's cringe humour, but she tries so hard, you can't help but admire her for it.

Don't forget to invite the vicar next door! I think you could do it, there are worse goals.
