The people who post comments online about sociopolitical issues tend be extremists one way or the other. But most people in general are moderates and don't fit either extreme's stereotype. Our society would be in even more danger if everyone who called themselves Democrat or Republican fit the stereotype. How you choose to define yourself is up to you but most of the people I know who have values like yours and aren't willing to identify as either party call themselves libertarians.

I don't know if that's necessarily the kind of thing that you should advocate, though, because libertarian has a specific meaning that is not "pro-gay-marriage moderate". It kind of refers to a whole host of political and economic positions and has specific cultural baggage. There's no special reason that just because someone doesn't identify with any major party that they should be in favor of gutting regulation and the social safety net.

People should be able to, you know, identify as a moderate or an independent if they don't agree with either party. Not be forced into a totally different political point of view. There's other things outside the party mainstream besides libertarianism.

Don't democrats and repubs have that same kind of problem?

I'm a libertarian (small-L) because I GENERALLY agree with libertarian principles more than conservative or liberal principles. I don't think our entire system needs to be completely gutted, but I do think it needs to be cut back. Anyhow, I'm not going to stop calling myself a libertarian just because some people have negative associations with the term due to some libertarians acting like asshats. Isn't that the kind of thing OP was talking about anyway?

Eh, I think it's somewhere in the middle. I'm not saying that you have to be a lockstep libertarian to call yourself one, or that you shouldn't call yourself libertarian because a lot of libertarians are dumb jerks. I'm trying to say that you shouldn't call yourself a libertarian just because you don't like either of the two parties, unless you actually agree with something about what libertarians are saying.

Oh, yeah, I definitely agree with that! Sorry if I misread your comment, anon.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:55 am (UTC)(link)
Nah, it's probably my fault for letting my personal political judgments bleed into the point I was actually trying to make. Sorry bout that.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:27 pm (UTC)(link)
And that makes libertarians hated by both liberals and conservatives.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't think that's exactly what libertarians are? I mean the political party has an actual definition and values, you can't just be "I don't ID as either so I'll choose this other party!"
