(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:12 pm (UTC)(link)I find a lot of conservatives -- the ones that adhere to the party's main beliefs at least -- to be bigoted, homophobic and sexist. Like reading comments from them on places really disgusts me.
On the other hand, I find that liberals are pretty annoying a lot of the time, at least the ones that post on places like ONTD or Tumblr, as they can be arrogant and condescending to any opinion that isn't extremely leftist.
So I was wondering what I would identify myself as. I support stuff like gay marriage and abortion rights but I don't want to align myself with the nutjobs at ONTD either.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)Really, though, it's hard to say, because I don't know anything about your beliefs outside of a basic commitment to human equality and dignity and opposition to bigotry - which is good, but also compatible with a whole host of political positions.
But in general, I would say there's nothing wrong with belonging to a position even if you dislike or disagree with a lot of the people who are broadly coming from the same place. That's just kind of how politics works. The world is full of dickheads and it's very unlikely you're ever going to find a place where they're all on the other side.

I mostly get around it by not being very interested in politics, so I don't really feel the need to align myself with any one group. My boyfriend is the same way, and will call himself "libertarian without the crazy," which I think is a good descriptor.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)I don't know if that's necessarily the kind of thing that you should advocate, though, because libertarian has a specific meaning that is not "pro-gay-marriage moderate". It kind of refers to a whole host of political and economic positions and has specific cultural baggage. There's no special reason that just because someone doesn't identify with any major party that they should be in favor of gutting regulation and the social safety net.
People should be able to, you know, identify as a moderate or an independent if they don't agree with either party. Not be forced into a totally different political point of view. There's other things outside the party mainstream besides libertarianism.

Having the same liberal values doesn't mean you align with them, just don't associate yourself with them.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)And for reals, who the hell is going to be all "omg you're just like the nutjobs at ONTD!!!" if you happen to say you're a liberal.
I just...guess I don't really get your issue. You can't just isolate yourself and never identify as anything just because you don't want to "align yourself" with extremists.

if you feel you're liberal overall though then i'd use the label "moderate liberal" to distance yourself from the negativity that usually comes with identifying with a certain alignment. that won't keep people from jumping to aforementioned conclusions tho, but it might make them think twice before assuming you're extreme.

If "bigoted, homophobic, and sexist" are really no more problematic for you than "annoying, arrogant, and condescending," you might want to take a good hard look at your priorities, though.

This mostly assumes you're in the US
I know a few conservatives here at the university who sure as hell didn't vote for Bush.
As for liberals, a lot of them are fucking NIMBYS (Not In My Backyard--basically they want change but not anything that might in any way inconvenience them). Don't confuse Liberal with Left Wing, though. They're often very different. A liberal might just be a centrist a little left of pure neutral. Please enjoy this instructional video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u52Oz-54VYw
How about you just identify as yourself? The two party system's a racket. It's reduced the running of the country into doubles ping pong. Vote for who you agree with most. Own your own ideas rather than adopting a bullshit platform.
I'm mostly left wing, but I'm only registered democrat because New York requires that to vote in primaries. I don't fit on the binary and thank god, at least that means I'm thinking for myself a little bit.
