So something I was wondering.

I find a lot of conservatives -- the ones that adhere to the party's main beliefs at least -- to be bigoted, homophobic and sexist. Like reading comments from them on places really disgusts me.

On the other hand, I find that liberals are pretty annoying a lot of the time, at least the ones that post on places like ONTD or Tumblr, as they can be arrogant and condescending to any opinion that isn't extremely leftist.

So I was wondering what I would identify myself as. I support stuff like gay marriage and abortion rights but I don't want to align myself with the nutjobs at ONTD either.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
"A leftist who's not a total dickhead" might be a good start. Because the fact that there are liberals who are dickheads doesn't mean that you have to be one too.

Really, though, it's hard to say, because I don't know anything about your beliefs outside of a basic commitment to human equality and dignity and opposition to bigotry - which is good, but also compatible with a whole host of political positions.

But in general, I would say there's nothing wrong with belonging to a position even if you dislike or disagree with a lot of the people who are broadly coming from the same place. That's just kind of how politics works. The world is full of dickheads and it's very unlikely you're ever going to find a place where they're all on the other side.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Don't judge a party by their tumblr or ONTD followers. Heck, don't judge an entire party based on internet discussions. There is so much asshattery on every side it's really not a great representation.

Oh man, I'm another "conservatives disgust me with their bigotry, liberals disgust me with their condescension" person.

I mostly get around it by not being very interested in politics, so I don't really feel the need to align myself with any one group. My boyfriend is the same way, and will call himself "libertarian without the crazy," which I think is a good descriptor.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:21 pm (UTC)(link)
The people who post comments online about sociopolitical issues tend be extremists one way or the other. But most people in general are moderates and don't fit either extreme's stereotype. Our society would be in even more danger if everyone who called themselves Democrat or Republican fit the stereotype. How you choose to define yourself is up to you but most of the people I know who have values like yours and aren't willing to identify as either party call themselves libertarians.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)

I don't know if that's necessarily the kind of thing that you should advocate, though, because libertarian has a specific meaning that is not "pro-gay-marriage moderate". It kind of refers to a whole host of political and economic positions and has specific cultural baggage. There's no special reason that just because someone doesn't identify with any major party that they should be in favor of gutting regulation and the social safety net.

People should be able to, you know, identify as a moderate or an independent if they don't agree with either party. Not be forced into a totally different political point of view. There's other things outside the party mainstream besides libertarianism.

And that makes libertarians hated by both liberals and conservatives.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:29 pm (UTC)(link)
But I don't think that's exactly what libertarians are? I mean the political party has an actual definition and values, you can't just be "I don't ID as either so I'll choose this other party!"

I'm a very liberal/leftist person, but I definitely find people like that annoying, too. My sister's a total SJW and she can annoy me with that, but I'm still a liberal.

You can say the exact same thing about conservatives, you know. There are conservatives that aren't dicks as well as liberals that aren't, and there is a group of dicks in both parties.
Having the same liberal values doesn't mean you align with them, just don't associate yourself with them.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
True but the majority of conservatives are against rights for gays or women and IMO there's not a whole lot of ways to not make that assholish.

Please keep in mind that Tumblr and ONTD are not actually representative of most real-life liberals. Talk to actual people who are politically active outside in the real world, and you might find you have more common with liberals than you though. I find it sad words like "liberal" or "feminist" are becoming dirty words because of sjw.
omorka: (Liberty/Justice OTP)

[personal profile] omorka 2013-07-04 12:14 am (UTC)(link)
They're not. They were made dirty words by the center-right domination of the public discourse during the '80s after the worst excesses of the '70s, and have remained so. (Even before that, "feminist" was a little bit fringe.) They've been fighting words, labels taken up to spite the dominant paradigm, for pretty much my whole life. SJWs and the backlash against them are only the most recent recursion.

That doesn't make sense. There are super crazy vegetarians out there but I don't let that stop me from being a vegetarian. There are nutjobs in every group everywhere, doesn't mean you have to suddenly avoid all correlation ever.

And for reals, who the hell is going to be all "omg you're just like the nutjobs at ONTD!!!" if you happen to say you're a liberal.

I just...guess I don't really get your issue. You can't just isolate yourself and never identify as anything just because you don't want to "align yourself" with extremists.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:24 pm (UTC)(link)
Personally, I've found that hardcore left-wingers are just as bigoted as hardcore right-wingers in a lot of ways. Lost count of how many times I've heard a self-proclaimed "liberal" rant about right-wing bigotry, then turn around and spout racist or homophobic bullshit while disguising it as
enlightened and "progressive".

Please don't judge anybody from either party by what you see online. Look up what political parties are in your state/area (Young Democrats, Republican Party of Wherever, etc.), check out their websites, go to their meetings, talk to their members, read some of their literature, then make a decision on what party to join.

Honestly? That's why I usually say I'm independent or moderate. Those crowds tend to be saner [and less self-righteous] than the liberals and conservatives. That and I've found that as along as you steer away from the hardcore groups for either one, people tend to be a lot more chill about things.

you don't have to adhere to a label at all, really. if someone asks for my political alignment i tell them i'm independent. folks who want to know how you align yourself tend to jump to conclusions when it comes to specific issues.

if you feel you're liberal overall though then i'd use the label "moderate liberal" to distance yourself from the negativity that usually comes with identifying with a certain alignment. that won't keep people from jumping to aforementioned conclusions tho, but it might make them think twice before assuming you're extreme.

I usually call myself a socialist anarchist, which confuses people enough that they stop asking questions.

If "bigoted, homophobic, and sexist" are really no more problematic for you than "annoying, arrogant, and condescending," you might want to take a good hard look at your priorities, though.

[personal profile] chardmonster 2013-07-04 12:28 am (UTC)(link)
I'm sorry, what party? Are you in a country with an actual (large) party called The Conservatives or are you pretending that all conservatives are Republican (HA!) or that all Republicans are bigoted homophobic and sexist (a lot of the younger ones are fed up with that and support things like gay marriage).

I know a few conservatives here at the university who sure as hell didn't vote for Bush.

As for liberals, a lot of them are fucking NIMBYS (Not In My Backyard--basically they want change but not anything that might in any way inconvenience them). Don't confuse Liberal with Left Wing, though. They're often very different. A liberal might just be a centrist a little left of pure neutral. Please enjoy this instructional video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u52Oz-54VYw

How about you just identify as yourself? The two party system's a racket. It's reduced the running of the country into doubles ping pong. Vote for who you agree with most. Own your own ideas rather than adopting a bullshit platform.

I'm mostly left wing, but I'm only registered democrat because New York requires that to vote in primaries. I don't fit on the binary and thank god, at least that means I'm thinking for myself a little bit.

If it helps, ONTD is pretty extreme and one-sided. But ONTD is also not something that most people irl are going to tag you with. (Tumblr too; even though I'm sure more people know what Tumblr is, it will still be a minority.) You don't have to like everyone there to call yourself a liberal or whatever. Just believe what you believe, and decide each issue individually. DON'T toe a party line - that's my advice. You can affiliate yourself with a party or register with a party, but ALWAYS decide each issue on its own merits rather than what your party tells you, and ALWAYS vote based on issues and merits, and not on party line, and tell people you are "independent" or "generally more liberal" or whatever you think is most accurate and if someone calls you a shithead because "all the people in [X extremist internet hole] are dicks!" then they're the one being a shithead. just my $0.02
