Personally, I've found that hardcore left-wingers are just as bigoted as hardcore right-wingers in a lot of ways. Lost count of how many times I've heard a self-proclaimed "liberal" rant about right-wing bigotry, then turn around and spout racist or homophobic bullshit while disguising it as
enlightened and "progressive".

This. I knew someone who would harass strangers on the bus if he decided by looking at them that they were a relevant soapbox for one of his liberal rants. He was the most vile human being I ever knew in my life (for many reasons, but that was a big one).

same tbh. my dad's kind of ignorant about certain things, mostly immigration issues, but i've found that he seems to be a lot more accepting of certain people than my liberal mother as well as my step-parents on both sides. all of them are kinda racist tho. being liberal doesn't mean you're open-minded. it takes more than a political alignment to be accepting of other people.

Yeah, this is why I describe myself as left-wing or socialist irl rather than ~liberal because 90% of the self-described liberals I've known on- and off-line have been slightly left of center at best and basically supportive of keeping the status quo except with gay marriage and maybe legalizing weed.

ED this probably also has something to do with being Canadian, as our national Liberal party is actually solidly centrist and probably leads to people calling themselves liberals when really their beliefs would be considered moderate or on-the-fence in the American system.
