that wasn't the afterlife, that was just a bunch of humans given immortality by a supercomputer that gained self-awareness and went batshit crazy

That's how I read it. I probably missed some deeper meaning though xD

Not the OP, but I would say it could be taken as a metaphor for the afterlife - an eternity at the mercy of an omniscient, impotent, whimsical 'higher power' created in our image. (It could also be taken literally- the story takes place after human life as we know it has been completely eradicated)

The game offers a possiblity to "die" and continue playing. That's in quotes for as reason, but there is a literal death involved... it's hard to explain. Great game though.
