This is my favourite book! Didn't think there would ever be a secret on it.

It hits hard, doesn't it?

At first I read the title as "I have no mouth, and I must screw". Was confused.

/cool story, bro

I didn't know this book, but I've just read the summary and OMG, it gives nightmares.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:06 pm (UTC)(link)
True story: I was actually SURPRISED that this was not a "Harlan's such an asshole, I can't like his books now that I found out" secret.

I know, I know..."Cool story sis."

This book kept me awake staring at the ceiling for weeks, so don't feel bad.

This book disturbed me so much. It was not a pleasant experience at all. Just seeing the title gives me a goosebumps nowadays.

That's the cover of the video game, isn't it? If that was intentional, OP, I definitely recommend that you read the story as well! A lot of his other stories are just as great, so be sure to give them a chance too.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:30 pm (UTC)(link)
huh? why?

that wasn't the afterlife, that was just a bunch of humans given immortality by a supercomputer that gained self-awareness and went batshit crazy

right? o_o

That's how I read it. I probably missed some deeper meaning though xD

(Anonymous) 2013-07-03 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
Not the OP, but I would say it could be taken as a metaphor for the afterlife - an eternity at the mercy of an omniscient, impotent, whimsical 'higher power' created in our image. (It could also be taken literally- the story takes place after human life as we know it has been completely eradicated)

[Picture is the cover of the PC video game "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream", based on the short story of the same name by Harlan Ellison.]

This has completely changed my view on death. Now, I hope there is no afterlife.

For me, I think it was Vonnegut's Requiem Mass, which generally isn't very good except for the idea that an eternity as ashes is probably a better deal than a judgement day.

Ponies and Bronies win again.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 02:11 am (UTC)(link)
I hope you mean the book version, because if you were talking about the game I'd be side-eyeing you very hard.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-04 03:24 am (UTC)(link)
Eh, don't worry about it, there is no afterlife. It's just something humans created a thousand times over to make death a little easier to cope with. Once your brain is gone, so are you. Rejoice!

man I love that story, and the ludicrous batshit adventure game too

hey, just last night I was watching some old MST3K episode with

"They arrested Harlan Ellison!"
"Good."

I just wanted to share that because it's awesome.

Good news is: all current scientific evidence suggests there is no afterlife! Consciousness appears to be an emergent property of the brain that does not survive death.

(I've always found this comforting. Not existing didn't bother me for the billions of years before I was born, so I doubt it will bother me for the billions of years after I die.)

That story T_T I dearly love robots and computers and this story just trampled all over my feelings by making AI a psychotic maniac. A robot would never! The single most disturbing text I've ever read!

But it never occurred to me that it might have been a metaphor for afterlife, I might review my opinion of it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-05 10:54 pm (UTC)(link)
I guess I'm the only one who just found it sort of ridiculous, try-too-hard-y, and waaaaay racist and sexist, even beyond what you expect for a work from that time period.
