I thought the same, for a while I was confused about such an old film suddenly developing a fandom. I remember it being a cute film OP. I've never seen this television show, I don't think it's on in Britain, if it is it's a cable channel I don't have.

That reminds me, I definitely need to watch this! Thanks OP. I mean, it's Michael J. Fox, the 80s and werewolves - what's not to love?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 08:01 pm (UTC)(link)
I just read the secrets as if they were about the movie. The same thing goes for Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 08:22 pm (UTC)(link)
It fills me with so much "get off my lawn" irritation. It doesn't help that apparently the only thing the movie and show share is the title and that the lead is a werewolf.

I tried watching the movie after I got into the show. It was cute and I would have loved it, but the casual homophobia really turned me off of it. Sorry, anon. :(

hahaha oh god i forgot about this movie!

oh and csb: michael j. fox went to the school my godmom used to teach at.

Thank you! I am not alone.

[Picture is two screen-captures from the 1985 film "Teen Wolf"; the first one has Michael J. Fox turned into a werewolf (like, a regular human but with long hair everywhere and fangs) wearing a letterman jacket and sunglasses next to school lockers. The other picture has the same character minus sunglasses biting into a can while a blonde woman next to him screams happily.]

Every time people talk about Teen Wolf, I always think people are talking about the 1980s movie, and then I realize they're talking about the nowadays show, and it breaks my heart.

Why doesn't anyone remember Michael J. Fox with sunglasses and a Hawaiian shirt, or his letterman jacket and playing basketball. Because there is no God, that's why, stupid.

Same. It's been so long that the tv series has been out but I still think of the movie first whenever someone mentions the title.

I always think about big wolf on campus TV series. The first time I heard about the fandom I was really confused.

I saw a bit of the TV show with my then-SO when it first started and we were so confused as to why someone would make a dark and edgy tv version of an 80s movie about Michael J. Fox as a werewolf doing rad slam dunks in cool guy shades.

Do they even play basketball in the TV show??

I was also so confused about the title of this series vs. MJF movie. I'm so glad I'm not the only one.

Eighties Teen Wolf is the superior Teen Wolf.

Pretty sure most people born before 1995 remember or at least know of this movie, but have no cause to talk about it.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 11:20 pm (UTC)(link)
I'm writing a modern fantasy story starring werewolves. It has all the tropes of cool, modern weres but guess which Teen Wolf it leans towards?

;) That's right! It's the 80s movie!

The new show is fun but 80s TW is still more subversive in that it gives us a werewolf story that is neither about horror nor hero-fantasies. Furthermore, it's a radical example of a world in which people don't know about werewolves but quickly come to terms with finding out they exist (especially since the first one they meet is a good guy.) There's stuff happening in 80s TW that we STILL don't see in modern monster stories. Maybe it's ahead of it's time!

They're two completely different things, so even though I already knew of and had enjoyed the movie, I also love the show. I haven't seen the movie in years, though. I wonder how well it holds up?

Sounds like you don't like change. Don't worry. I generally don't like it either.

You know, the TV series is getting me to watch that movie. I have plans to kick back and watch it with my friend soon. So it's not like it's being completely forgotten or overshadowed. It will always be there and with any luck, will gain new fans.

[personal profile] anonlulz 2013-07-07 12:30 am (UTC)(link)
I remember it, but the movie sucks. Not MJF's best role, really.

I remember it (I think all of us Of A Certain Age do), and it's a fun little movie, but boy, is it dated. Worse than most '80s films, I mean.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 01:24 am (UTC)(link)
Well I hate to state the obvious/break it to you OP, but a lot of Teen Wolf's (the show) fans are teens and wouldn't know about the cheesy movie from the 80s that their show is based on. Frankly the movie doesn't withstand the test of time and I like the show a lot more.

Give the show a chance. I thought it would be stupid (I'm skeptical of "remakes") but now I'm addicted.

Don't worry, nonnie - that's exactly what I think of too. (Hell, I even have "Win in the End" on my MP3, LOL.)

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 03:21 am (UTC)(link)
I don't think it's that people don't remember as much as it's not very relevant anymore. Not only is that movie really dated and older than most of the show's following, but you're talking about a TV show that is currently on the air. Obviously people are going to be more likely to talk about the current media than something older than they are.
