I'm kind of with you there, OP. I do understand the appeal but I can never get over the dub/noncon vibes. I mean, at least regular non/dubcon doesn't hide behind another name and pretend to be the positive thing a lot of a/b/o fics pretend to be.

There's a *lot* of a/b/o fics with dub or non con, but there's also a surprising number that don't invoke either. (Cuz it's fiction you can dictate how much out of control a heat actually makes a character - are they just super horny but capable of deciding to have or not have sex? or are they completely incapable of making decisions one way or the other?)

I like some A/B/O fic, but the whole non-con/dub-con thing irritates me, too. Particularly because most writers seem to love making that part of the whole *society*, with this or that person being treated horribly, or like property, or like a child or a sex toy and it's all good and no big and *tra la*!!!

No. How about incredible biological urges that you can *still think through* and choose your mate/one-night-stand and enjoy, instead of weird rapey shite?

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 08:59 pm (UTC)(link)
You clearly haven't read all that much a/b/o fic, because the most common type of a/b/o fic that I've read had the characters *rebelling* against their oppressive society.

More than a few are set "post-omega rights" and have part of the world building be that while things are better in the present it wasn't always good for omegas.

(Some stories also have Alpha's as the oppressed people, but that's unusual)

Forgot to add- one of my favorite fics is an Avengers fic where omega!Tony winning the legal battle for ownership of Stark Industries at 20 is considered a landmark omega rights case.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 10:43 pm (UTC)(link)
Would you happen to have a link to that fic?

[personal profile] tabaqui 2013-07-06 09:04 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no, i've read quite a lot and i can only remember one or two fic where that was part of the story.

Fandoms differ.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-06 09:35 pm (UTC)(link)
Damn, I'm in the less creepy fandoms? That never happens to me. I must be in the twilight zone.

(Also, how much, exactly, do you read? Cuz I've read at least 100 a/b/o fics and while the one shots tend to be just porn, the chapter stories tend to be more complicated and politic-y)

I have no idea. I...don't count the fic i read? I've been in fandom online (LJ and such) for nearly ten years, and reading ABO fic since it became a 'thing', so who knows.

TBH, that stuff just adds to the squick, for me. I wanted to read sexy funtimes fic, or nice character/relationship fic, or just some feeels...

and now I'm in the middle of characters giving speeches about why treating omegas like second-class-citizens is wrong, and there's all the social slavery dynamic thing happening, and serious power imbalances...and the society itself squicks me to the point that I just can't enjoy the fic anymore, whether or not Clint or Tony is defying Steve's seventy-years-in-the-past expectations of how an omega should act and sticking it to the alpha man.

Pretty much this. I don't have a problem with 'biological urges' and whatnot, or even the whole 'omg, heat, must have sex!!' thing.

But when the whole society is all 'omega=sex toy/slave/child/whatever' it kinda ruins the sexy vibe for me.

THIS.

I can ignore the mpreg (That's usually solved by stopping reading once someone mentions pregnancy), I can ignore the non-con/dub-con elements... but the one thing I can't stand about the A/B/O thing is that writers seem incredibly SET on that "omega = sex toy/slave/child/whatever" dynamic, even when people in kinkmemes ASK for A/B/O fics that defy the dynamic. I remember at the avengerskinkmeme someone asking for a fic where two Omegas could've together, and happy, and without needing an Alpha... and the fic writer wrote a story where the two omegas... ended with an Alpha. (Asexual alpha, but still, he was the one who 'completed' them) and everyone applauded the fic and I was totally confused because that was not what the prompter asked... and then I realized that most if not all the A/B/O fic I had read always, always ended up with "A/O" pairings (very rarely B/O pairings) which in the society that they paint is the equivalent of het sex. In a slash fic. wow.

(And that's when I stopped giving chances to A/B/O fic, even when recced)

Meh, that would've made me kinda pissed if i'd ask for A and gotten X.

But yes. Please some ABO fics where the whole society doesn't make my skin want to crawl off my body.

I know one apparently stalled Hobbit fic where omegas basically have all the power in Dwarven society, typically having a harem of alphas.

(I will note: even in Tolkien canon, the male/female ratio amongst dwarves is super unbalanced, with only a third of the population female, and even then not all of them marry - A/B/O fics usually translate that into Dwarves having very few omegas).

The fic is supposed to eventually end up with Bilbo ending up with a harem made up of several of the Company's members.

I actually like that fic because it has that they can control themeselves - both the alphas and Bilbo as the omega (Hobbit society in these fics tend to either have more even numbers, or a higher proportion of omegas than alphas) - and when Bilbo went into heat at the start of the story, he didn't have very dub-con sex with anyone. It's all about how after finding out he's an omega everyone is vying for a place in his harem.

for a lot of people, that's the appeal, though. Just like some people enjoy fuck-or-die, rapefic, sex pollen, etc. It's all branches on the same tree.

(Anonymous) 2013-07-07 04:43 am (UTC)(link)
Because the kind is dubcon/noncon related and getting rid of the wierd offkilter rapey shite is...getting rid of a large portion of the kink and then it wouldn't be that kink? O_O

If you want something like that write it yourself, but getting uppity because people want to write/read the creepy dub/noncon kink for being dub/noncon (and going against it) is silly.

Oh for fuck's sake. DISCUSSION ABOUT WHAT PEOPLE DON'T LIKE ABOUT A/B/O FICS. This is EXACTLY the place to 'get uppity' about it.

Jayzus fuck.
